Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

Thank you for all your comments, info and warnings. Much obliged. I'll try and pick up the various points. I never got to see the EICR. It was mentioned by the agent but the executors wanted me to pay them for having it done and seemed pointless as I was intending to have new work done and I...

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

Ive got no history. Previous owner died. It was an executor sale. The unmarked items on the left have nothing connected to them. Just space fillers.

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

I plan to have an 8.5kw shower which is ~35 amps I think. Will a 40A RCBO be adequate or would I be better to go for a 50A type for a bit more headroom?

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

These are the breakers which seem to be still available. there are 4 empty slots and 2 more with unused breakers so a total of 6 slots. So a shower RCD and a suitably rated MCB ought to fit and be OK? Fingers crossed🤞🤞 Thanks for your responses guys.

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

Thanks I'll try and get a pic when I get back home. What do you define as 'suitable'? obviously no damage and room for an extra breaker anything else? It possibly original from when built in 1997. It has an RCD

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

I've just moved into a flat and want to get an electric shower fitted. The installation has passed a recent EICR done by the seller but warn that the current CU is a plastic type. There is sufficient room to fit extra breakers. So that I can be best prepared when meeting the electrician, is...

VAT or no VAT on solar?

They should not add vat to their labour but could easily make a fast buck by charging you for the invoice price for their materials which includes their vat and overlooking giving you a rebate when they get theirs!

    RFI From Inverter

Those ferrite toroids will need to be pretty beefy to avoid magnetic saturation from the DC flowing from the panels (10's of amps)and even more beefy for the battery leads handling several time the panel current. Once saturated their performance at RF will be greatly reduced. The sort of...

Additional PV Panels on certain time of the day in the string

Use your plcc to open the ac , then switch the dc and finally reconnect the ac with say a 1 second delay between each step.

    Smart Meter query

Virtually every device you list is a non resistive load and so ohms law calculations cannot be used to work out the power consumed. The power factor has to be born in mind.

Adding a shower mcb to CU

Should that be “yes its perfectly acceptable to add a new circuit”? Yes ive seen comments about no SPD fitted elsewhere but only as suggestions? Why would RCD need changing? In favour of 10mA one perhaps?

It has not had one before so will need a new feed from the CU My current CU is plastic and to date has passed EICR tests. There is room for an extra mcb. Underground fault - lost neutral

Properties down stream of a broken neutral will experience all manner of voltages with respect to their live phase depending on the loads between the floating neutral and the other phases imposed by subsequent properties down the line up to and including full phase to phase voltage in extreme...

    Underground fault - lost neutral

I wonder if an overvoltage relay could be configured to simulate an earth leakage and trip the rcd to avoid the need for an inline contactor? Bob
