Not been here for a while - some news!

I've not been active here but if you visit the orange and blue forum you'll have seen the blue bulb around there quite a bit. That's for the sole reason that I deliberately limited myself to one electrical forum to avoid spending even more time online. But things have changed and I have more...

    Tony S

Long before any electrical forums, the first time I spoke to Tony about mercury arc rectifiers, it was obvious in seconds that he knew his onions, and equally that he was a genuine bloke who was interesting and fun to chat with. We did occasionally touch upon the subjects of wine, women and song...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

For my money, the greatest concern would be the compatibility of the steel armour wire with the earth terminals, for making a permanent connection. Normal screw terminals are designed for plain copper or tinned copper wire, which compacts and flows to form a gas-tight metal-to-metal interface...

    Hydro turbine control

Two parameters not mentioned in your list are reactive power (measuring) and excitation (controlling). The PLC is controlling real power flow and monitoring for reverse power, would it also make sense to give it supervision of the VAR flow or is that to be preset within the alternator controls?

E27 ADAPTOR PLUG - IS THERE SUCH A THING?

You can buy E27 to B22 adaptors. You can buy second-hand B22 plugs. These two statements, individually or in combination, are not to be construed as suggestions or a recommended course of action. Especially not by persons seeking to construct a pendant drop from an E27 luminaire.

    3 Phase supply capacity?

You need to find out the current rating of the supply in amps. The limiting factor is often the size of the DNO's fuses, but the rating of the fuses themselves may not match the label on the outside. There is another aspect, with some classes of metering, that exceeding the official supply...

    Met. Vic. AVR

That's a great idea. I suppose the main task will be setting up the field resistances so that the various different kinds of regulator can all interface to machines that might have very different ratings compared to their original applications. Otherwise, some might be at a disadvantage in terms...

Nice piece of kit Hubert. Is it allied to a specific generator that you have?

A Mercury Arc Rectifier says hello

Thanks chaps. I'll take a look around over the weekend, guessing there will be a few more diehard industrials here I might know. Driving later so nothing more than Handel's water music until I get home.

A Mercury Arc Rectifier says hello

Hi, I'm Lucien, I post under my own name on a number of forums but as my avatar has been a lit-up mercury arc since forever, I've called myself Big Blue Bulb here for a change. I'm an electrical and electronic engineer specialising in entertainment technology. Although much of my work these...
