    The Doctor, I agree that a surface wired circuit to a 12v downlight in a bathroom would not 'require' an RCD as it of no benefit as such. A look on the Electrical Safety Council website indicates this is to be addressed in upcoming ammendments to BS7671. However 'as it stands' it is required...

    FCU on ring

    If the FCU is on the ring, it should be substantially the same reading as the rest of the ring. The spur it supplies should have a slightly higher reading. I would test this also, as the R1R2 for the circuit may not be obtained without it, nor the polarity verified. Regards

    Newbie Alert! I would put an RCD on the circuit, as chances are that the cables supplying the 12V downlights are concealed in a wall <50mm, and the dangers of penetration of the 230v cable still exist
