Thanks Canoeboy for that link. They say that the Superkettle can save energy. I'm trying to figure out whether it would in this house. It's actually my friend's birthday coming up in a week. Sadly, they say they're out of stock until the 22nd!

Thanks for the help guys. No I don't imagine he'll be spending much time up there, so LEDs are probably overkill. And considering space issues, it looks like pendants/CFLs are probably the best choice.
Thanks for your thoughts. Being a student who so far hasn't landed a job in the industry...
Hi folks.
A friend has asked if I can install some lighting up in his loft space. He wants to be energy efficient, and I'm wondering which is the best way to go. It has cross-beams all over the place and no room to stand except at the centre, so he's generally only going to store stuff up...
What I've been told up to now is that the C&G side gets my paper qualifications (ie the theory) and the NVQ3 shows that I have mastered the practical side. This makes sense to me, particularly as I'm aware of how much more solidly I learn something if I'm actually doing it, as opposed to...
Hi Bane. I'm (ahem) 50, and I have no site experience - no practical experience at all in the industry. If you're not having too much difficulty, maybe there's hope for me, but I've been told that my age counts against me a lot.
Due to some rather difficult personal circumstances in the last...
Thanks kme - all sound advice. I am long enough in the tooth to have picked up stuff like reliability, courtesy and cleanliness/tidiness being very important. I can do that O)
As a matter of fact, I want to specialise in installation of green technologies. But I do need that essential...
Seeing the bleak description of the trade and the difficulty in joining it in another thread here, I mentioned something about it on Facebook. Someone has responded that two electricians he knows in Liverpool are having a very hard time getting any work, as there is a flood of Polish...
It's depressing to see the replies in this thread. Two years ago I was trying to make a decision about what to train up for (I'd been a recording engineer for 20 years until an ear infection damaged my hearing on one side).
All the advice I got at the time (I didn't know about this forum then)...
Hi m4tty. Sorry to go quiet on you. I don't know if the course has changed since you took it, but yes - there's a practical exam to get the qualification. To quote from the NICEIC course guide:
'The 2392-10 is assessed by both an on-line multiple choice assessment and a practical assessment on...
I'm confused by this, I thought a Minor Works Certificate was only suitable for 'additions and alterations to an installation that do not extend to the provision of a new circuit'. (Quoted from Appendix 6 BS7671:2008).
So none of the options would be appropriate.

I mis-copied the original question. It gave the value of the breaker (32A). Sorry for that. I can't really memorise all the maximum Zs values for all the breakers and fuses, which is why I was wondering about calculation.
Spinlondon - thank you. I'm not sure why I work with 5.5 rather than 55...
