The conduit has a lower rating to add in to your calculations. Without having any figures no-one else can really tell you what is safe and correct to use but conduit will mean less resistance and heat them through the insulation.

Without seeing it this sounds like the only reason for the c2 is the connections made at the cu? The actual wiring will have been compliant at the time (copper shortages in the 70s) and while not ideal is not potentialy dangerous or up to current standards any more than lots of historic items...

Very true about the Best Practice guide but it's not as thorough or wide-ranging as the Codebreakers book. Forr learners its not quite as effective to follow the trail back to BS7671 to find out why they think it should be a particular code which at the end of the day is what everyone should be...

I think the responses give a good indication of the problem with getting the Codebreakers book. Not everyone agrees. I'd say its worth getting, if you can get a discount, when you're learning the ropes. It's a good learning tool but can't be used as your only source. Read its notes and see how...

Does the course you are doing have a course code? It sounds like the 2391-52 but you mention learning over 2 years and to access that you should already have some sort of Level 3 qualification.

The wavy line / arrow (tilde symbol) is the common connection but I'd recommend getting an electrician for your own safety (ring around to compare quotes). The blue cable may be neutral or an unmarked switched live connection.
