I’m currently second fixing a property after a previous spark I have a switch at the bottom of stairs which needs to control the lighting at the top of the stairs I have a 3 core for that and then the light switch at the top of the stairs needs to control the lights on the bottom floor however I only have one 3 core to do this how do I go about using this one 3 core I’ve only being doing houses for a year so not quite sure any help would be appreciated

Sounds like it wasn't allowed for by the previous spark.
The only way I can think of is to have both upstairs and downstairs lights switching together on the one 2way circuit. That still needs a separate neutral cable so both are on the same neutral.
I wired my previous house that way, and everyone thought it weird. Since both lights were on the stairs I thought it reasonably logical.

Thank you for your reply I think that’s gunna have to be the answer to have them both switch on together as getting another 3 core upstairs is nearly impossible now it shouldn’t be a major issue

RF switches maybe

Or explain to the customer its not possible with what you have to work with unless they will allow you to run additional cables.
Yeah it’s a new build that’s been fisrt fix by another sparky and I’ve turned up to second fix it and realised the problem they are suppose to be moving in a couple of weeks I’ll have to see what the site agent suggest

If this is house bashing on a construction site then I’d be inclined to ask the company you work for how it should be wired/connected or alternatively take a look at another property that has already been 2nd fixed?

They’ve said to me how they want it to be second fixed they want one of the switches at the bottom of the stairs to do the ground floor halway lights and the other switch to do the top of the stairs lights then at the top of stairs they want one of the switches to do the top of the stairs lights and the other switch to do the ground floor lights but there’s only one 3 core from the top of the stair switch to the bottom of the stair but there should be two I didn’t know if there was a way you could use the one 3 core

You need a 2nd 3 core and earth. Borrowing neutrals, which seemed to be suggested in a previous reply, will cause RCD tripping.
