Serious question Electricians vs People who do electrics

Impossible to answer accurately. One builder I know does the vast majority of the electrics, offering no paperwork. The other builder always gets me to do the electrics, however small. So... 50/50 based on my scientific study of a population of 2!

Knowing the difference between imperial cable and metric?

Out of interest would you say a cable ever has a lifespan? Let's say the imperial cable in this property is still in situ in another 50 years, and tests at 2Mohms?

Knowing the difference between imperial cable and metric?

Thanks everyone. It looks likely it's metric then, but not definitely. Thanks for the tip about the BS number @ExArmy , that will be a great help:). The earthing on the lights is a right old mess, so I've suggested they 'consider' a full rewire, especially if they are going to get sockets...

Knowing the difference between imperial cable and metric?

I have just carried out an EICR and am trying to determine if the 1mm single stranded twin and earth is imperial or metric. The sockets are all wired in 7/029 so are definitely imperial. I was under the impression that solid cores came in between 1969-72 indicating metric sizing. Was there...

    Mft calibration prices

Update for the OP... My information given was out of date. I have just rang CEF to get mine calibrated. Cost = £75 + VAT. They say they have now put their prices up to standard prices, as they were losing money on the lower prices they offered. Whereas it was once a year I went to CEF, it will...

Extractor fan install is noifiable, plus more!!

I laugh, but I expect that's what we all do :D

Extractor fan install is noifiable, plus more!!

Dave! That's highly dangerous! Have you now notified it and also used the correct, calibrated anenometer (no idea how to spell it) to measure the air flow!!! ;)

Extractor fan install is noifiable, plus more!!

A little off subject... Could anyone explain what the fan is actually doing if there are no vents for it to draw air into the room? It will never be a sealed room, so there will always be a little air drawn in, but certainly nothing like a 100mm diameter hole. I'm guessing the fan blades still...

Extractor fan install is noifiable, plus more!!

Excellent point. I offer to install a vent in the customers door every time, or saw off a small layer on the bottom of the door. I explain, quite throughly, that the fan simply can't do it's job if it is unable to suck air into the room. Every customer has said they will do it them selves. Every...

    Junction Box Recommendation

Hi James. You're posting in the electricians part of the forum, so we're all assuming you are an electrician, could I ask if you are? If not, the DIY section would be better, as you will get more help. It's bad practice because it breaks the BS7671 regulation shown in Appendix 15. Fig15A (iii)...

    Mft calibration prices

Let us know the price you get quoted David. It'll be interesting, plus helpful for others.

    Mft calibration prices

I just ring up and ask for a price. It always seems to be better (by quite alot), than the others. I do have a trade account with them, but I don't spend any other money with them. They usually have a set day of the week when they take the testers to whomever it is that calibrates them. You...

    Mft calibration prices

I'm guessing 'How f###ing much'. Not one I've heard before though :D

    Mft calibration prices

I always use CEF. I never use them for anything else as they are so expensive, but for some reason they are cheap to do MFT calibrations. £55 (Inc Vat) last year.

    Electrical Supply and who’s responsible?

I'm assuming the '60A isolator', is actually a 60A switch fuse (KMF switch), and it is that which is blowing?

Extractor fan install is noifiable, plus more!!

Basically, I'm going to ignore it for now. If I get pulled up on it with a building inspector, or on an assessment, I'll make a decision then if it's worth still fitting them.

Is it possible to take power for a 1.kw towel rail heater and extractor from a lighting circuit

Keep asking questions Peckham. We all started somewhere. Do say you're just starting out next time, rather than DIY post. Apologies if my post annoyed you, that wasn't the intent. I generally do just ignore DIY posts, but must have been in a more confrontational mood than normal. Why don't you...

    Napit and frequency of assessments.

How interesting Mort, thankyou. Fingers crossed I get a pass on this 3rd year, then all back to normal I expect. Basically, mort is saying I am an amazing electrician 💪😄

    Napit and frequency of assessments.

Morning everyone.. I have been registered with a scheme for around 12 years. My work is always good and never an issue. I was moved over from Stroma to Napit around 3 - 4 years ago. Napit came out and assessed me as per usual for the first 2 years, but since Covid I have had no visits. This...
