HMRC's Electricians Tax Safe Plan - Help!

In reply to Canoeboy, I taught IT, computer programming, website design in HTML, data communications and networking (the wired and wireless kind, not social networking!) Spent 25 years in the job in a FE college and the move to being a "retirement sparky" was just what I fancied doing when I...

HMRC's Electricians Tax Safe Plan - Help!

The last post in this discussion was April 2012.  Now, in January 2013, I've received a second letter, telling me what is alllowable to claim against income as expenses and can they help me to get my tax liability sorted out. My problem is that I only did about £3000 turnover last year which...

Counterfeit and Illegal Plugs and Leads

Let's get back to the original topic. I've just bought a 12v power supply for a LED light strip from a Hong Kong Ebay supplier called Pitalam. The lead is fitted with an unfused, moulded-on plugtop. I have contacted the supplier to ask for a legal lead and will leave a negative feedback...

Terminate SWA at the top of a cast iron lamp post

In answer to Special Location, the earthing is TT. I have terminated the SWA back to the earth bar in the DB. Earth loop is approx 90 ohms. I have glanded a dozen or so SWA cables so far in my career (18 months), but there is a lack of space in the lamp head and no firm fixing to attach it...

    Storage heater time switch

Can you tell me who is responsible for the time switch and cotactor relay that controls storage heaters in a property? The time switch seems to have been sealed by the electric board, so I presume it is their job to maintain it? Many thanks, Malcolm Chisholm

    Greetings from Southport

Hello, Gang! Made redundant after 25 years teaching IT at Southport College, I've retrained as a Sparky. Training at Southport College (yes, I went back as a student) was great. Many thanks to Tom, Phil, Andy, Ray and the rest of the Electrical Dept for excellent training. I'm looking to...

Terminate SWA at the top of a cast iron lamp post

I have come across a cast iron lamp post fed by SWA up through the middle of the post to the top. I have connected the steel armouring to earth (it was not previously connected) back to the DB. At present, the armouring is not connected to the post, but the cpc is crudely terminated to a...
