    Tesco solar panels

App Tesco are planning to install panels on their larger stores, a news item supported with this picture. What struck me is the angles of the panels. Is this layout the most efficient ? How would it be arrived at?

    Transformer welder: my puzzle

Several years ago car repairers had to be really careful not to damage electronic components. There was only normally the ECU and audio then, so goodness knows what precautions are needed now.

    Transformer welder: my puzzle

Because the voltage is kept low such that a hazardous current doesn't flow through the human body. The energy to create the weld comes from a very high current flowing when you effectively create a short circuit by striking an arc. That's what the transformer in your welder is doing; converting...

Wiring for small water heater and underfloor heating

Which could also be run from your wet central heating system; Much cheaper running than an electric heater.

Wiring for small water heater and underfloor heating

My son built an extension and installed wet underfloor heating which is fed from the same boiler as the conventional heating in the rest of the house. It is completely successful, BUT the new floor has six inches of Kingspan under the slab which is then screeded over the heating pipe and...

    landline number without the landline

I've wondered why it's legal. Most people consider repeated unsolicited calls to be a nuisance, but there is a whole industry, gathering and selling peoples numbers, setting up call centres and allowed to have large blocks of numbers for just that purpose. That's before using computerised...

Three Phase + N Voltage Monitoring Relay combined with NO or NC power relay?

I think you have answered your own question. Only a permanently engaged relay can be guaranteed to release under a range of unknown fault conditions. Requiring a relay to operate under unspecified supply fault conditions would require it to be on an auxiliary power source, such as a battery...

    Outdoor PIR

You may think this an odd recommendation, but there are presently some combined units in Lidl for not much over a tenner. I've just fitted one to replace an old unit which had started coming on during daylight and taking ages to go off. The new one has really good adjustments for light level...

    Tuya circuit breaker

I'm not sure what that device is, but it looks like a wifi remote control switch and current monitor rather than a normal circuit breaker. The "Round bit" is a current transformer which the supply cable live would pass through the middle of. Whatever, it isn't to be mounted alone, but in an...

    landline number without the landline

I'm with Virgin and they changed my original "copper" landline over to VOIP because it was easier than fixing recurring underground faults on the old wires. I have one of their packages, with broadband and TV and I don't think the phone cost can be separated or I would probably abandon it as...

RCD Tripping for no apparent reason

One possibly worthwhile guess is to closely inspect the outside lights for any sign of water ingress. Also anything else outdoor such as sockets, whether or not in use.

Am I expected to be competant in Extractor fan installs as a bs7671 electrician?

Thinking from a customer's point of view, I would expect a quote from you for the whole job. If part of it falls outside your expertise/capability (e.g. roofing work), I would expect you to subcontract and manage that element of it.

    Blue / Black Neutral?

I sense the presence of Predictive text! That intrusive invention of the Devil himself!

    Advice needed

Yes it's OK. It's not really two supplies, just two sensors/controls, both supplied from the same circuit breaker. The only difficulty which will arise is in adjusting their light sensors/sensitivity/timer adjustments as you can't tell which one is putting the light on at any time. My point...

    Blue / Black Neutral?

Probably, but no-one can be sure without testing, let alone over the internet. However, the blue isn't "new" wiring but a core of old Red/Yellow/Blue 3 + earth cable.

    Advice needed

Nothing difficult about your ideas, BUT, presumably you don't want the outside lights on until dark, so do you want a photocell, or perhaps a timer? Do you want to be able to override the controls with a manual switch, either on or off? These are things you need to consider and specify carefully...

    Start Capacitor Query

That sort of capacitor has a wide manufacturing tolerance. The one quoting a range is declaring that, the other is stating its nominal value. The important thing is that the voltage rating is high enough.

    Looped Supply

What's the relevance to an EICR anyway?

    Heavy grid loading today

I don't think anyone knows the solar contribution because much of it must be from private micro systems. According to the notes on the website the orange band on the main meter is "renewables", but I don't think they declare their definition of that. e.g. It's presumably wind, plus their...

    RFI From Inverter

That makes interesting reading. Perhaps the most telling paragraph is the one highlighting that the standards do not require testing of radiation from the DC inputs. That seems a glaring omission when the standards have been around for twenty-odd years. Thanks for sharing this topic and I hope...
