    Type d mcb

The magnetic trip on any device is more or less a vertical line, you either hit the threshold to trip it it, or you don't, and if you do the tripping time is as fast as the contacts can separate( Its actually a lot quicker than 0.4s, we often take it to be 0.1s but this is a rather pesismistic...

    Switching

Nice idea, haven't taken it that far myself because I very rarely need intermediates, I carry 1 on van just in case on call out jobs. Guess it helps with click the modules can be swapped around (it was the only way I could get a double intermediate for my hallway, no one seems to make them)...

    E-Scooters - fires

I always hate articles like this, yes there there are genuine issues but the articles always seem to be quite wide of the mark. AFAIK its perfectly acceptable for wall wart style adapaters to contain internal fusing, rather than a replaceable fuse on the contact face of the plug part. There is...

Two 100A incomers , so two Current Transformers ?

Agree 100% with the first, but not so sure about the bit in bold.... It would of course allow the solar/battery system to co-ordinate its output witth the loads in use in the property, but anything consumed for the 'other supply' has to flow through a sepatate current coil on the meter, I'm...

    MICC gland thread

If you could try to gently without forcing it to cut, put a 25mm locknut on the end of the tap, to see if the situation I have is replicated, the locknut should start to drop onto the thread, but there should be no way to get even one turn on it.

    RCD types - 531.3.3 - when doing EICR's

Personally, at this point, note but do not assign code If I am testing a commericial building and there are office sockets without any RCD protection then thats a C3, the client may decide to have C3 issues corrected if its at a reasonble cost, but if there is also a C3 for the two 12 way TPN...

    MICC gland thread

Thanks, for some reason I got it into my head that it was standard whitworth, you don't happen to know why it seems that a gland for a metric MICC cable appears to have an imperial thread... did such things happen around the changeover to metric (Of course, not implying that you are old enough...

    MICC gland thread

I think BSP is different to BSW https://www.stevensonplumbing.co.uk/bspt.html being sized to the diametrr of pipes they are intended for, rather than the actual diameter. That said the 3/4BSP does look just a smiden over 1" o/D however its 14tpi instead of 8tpi for the BSW which I expect would...

    MICC gland thread

Sorry, have you got a link, I've tried googling and it only finds some sort of investment consultancy firm! Brazed up slot sounds a good idea, but I am not really set up to do it, I doubt I'd braze something like that with my mapp torch! The having them turned sounds a good idea, I did ask a...

    MICC gland thread

I'm guessing this is one for the older chaps.... Got a job we are involved with at the moment, switchgear upgrades in a school built in '71. The submain between one end and the other is 4no single core 50mm pyros in a duct. Original panel has been correctly slotted between the gland holes...

Buying a property with a failed certificate

How accurate do you perceieve this date to be. Unearthed lighting circuits were permitted (as long as no class 1 accessories) upto 1966, now it would seem that this property was built after that going on that date, however if thats just a building surveyours best guess, then could they be 5 or...

    Backwards step?

I'm suddenty reminded of this (go to 22:33) from the secret life of machines (which has been remastered and is available to watch online) . Its interesting that that was made over 30 years ago when the only EV you'd see on the roads was the milk float

One Circuit of Breaker goes down and comes back? Possible or Impossible?

@kerching US breakers are better than that, they never trip in the first place https://www.allelectric.com/blog/2019/october/the-danger-of-federal-pacific-circuit-breaker-pa/

New to UK - general 13A Socket question

All 13A plugtops are fused. 13A sockets are commonly installed on ring cirucits fused at 32A although you will often find 16 or 20A radial circuits in use as well (32A radials in 4mm sometimes as well). Building 'christmas trees' of unfused adapters is discouraged. 13A MCBs are sometimes...

Three phase supply with strange wiring into single phase

Either two phases of a three phase system, or both sides of a split phase system, but you'd need to measure the voltage to know, and I would NOT suggest you start sticking test probes into the supply side of a cutout! The DNO should be able to send someone out to establish what is provided

    Solid State Relay

Could replace the 240v LED indicator with a 240v neon, a neon shouldnt strike at anything less than about 70v

    Spot the difference...

I understand its something to with them being adopted as a british standard, and there only being allowed 3 amendments before a new editon is required. So 15th was prior to this, how the 16th got away with it, I do not know, I'm guessing either the ruls changed, or they didnt realise at the...

    I am alive and well

I had to go and look, but I think I know who you mean, every single thumb-nail never really noticed it before. Its his company name that irks me though, some of the things he does just dont feel like they should be under that banner! Now then.... which YT do you picture kerch as being like....

    EICR codes

Was there mutiple colours of the metal crackle finish? I can picture boards with a grey/silver crackle finish before they went to painted battlehship grey and now you say it, I'm sure I remember darker crackle ones, I think, but I'd just assumed they were variations/dirty. And nah, got to be a...
