Best Practice Guide No 4 Issue 7

The one that stands out for me is "wrong" make of parts used in a CU is ONLY a C2 if certain types of damage are present. If no signs of damage it would appear mixed accessories in a CU are acceptable. And a plastic CU is at most a C3 even if under an escape stair. Plenty seem to think a...

    Emails blocked..

I use UK2.net for my domain names. They host the domain name and sell the email service to go with it, they will also host your website if you want them to, or provide a simple 1 page site for free. All in one place which might make it simpler for you? They are not the cheapest but I have...

    Emails blocked..

I use a paid for email service provided by the domain name host of my business domain name. I also have another domain name for personal use. Both work with Thunderbird mail and as long as I keep renewing the domain name and email hosting there should be no reason for them to ever stop working.

    Electric towel rail.

Yes standard practice to leave a gap for expansion of the water. I wonder if this is fallout from the lousy EU regs on electric heaters like LOT20 (Why the hell are WE still abiding by that rubbish?) and "prohibiting" simple electric heating elements means they are not foul of those silly...

    Electric towel rail.

I am not doubting you can buy a "wet" towel rail, and a simple electric element with a 1/2" BSP thread that screws into the bottom. The issue is every one I have looked at so far says "central heating only not for electric element" I have no doubt I could ignore that and it would work fine. I...

    Electric towel rail.

I want a simple electric towel rail for an elderly customer. Back in the day I would have just bought a "wet" towel rail, inserted plugs in all but one port, and an electric element in one of the bottom ports. Job done. Turn it on from the wall switch outside the bathroom, it heats up...

    Convector Heaters

If it is one of the ones labelled "storage heating" (even though they are panel heaters) then they are both rated at 32A so you will be fine with your new bigger heater.

    Convector Heaters

So your modified circuit would have a 2000W, a 500W and a 1250W heater, a total of 3750W. That totals about 16 amps. So as long as the circuit breaker for that circuit is 16A or more you will be okay. If you don't know the rating of the one that is there, post a close up picture of it please.

    2-way Light Switch Question

It can sometimes reduce the length of cable, e.g if the supply is nearest to the first switch and the light is nearest to the second. It can also cause confusion as it is a much less common way to wire 2 way lighting.

Power to outdoor sockets cutting out over night no fuse trip?

Are you sure it is not just too cold for it to operate? Some fridges or freezers stop working if you put them in a shed and it gets too cold. If the LCD display is on power is still getting to it, so it is not a fault with the outside socket.

    Convector Heaters

2 heater circuits and 5 heaters. You need to work out which heaters are fed from which circuit breakers (turn each CB off one at a time and see which heaters go off) Then when you know how many are on the circuit breaker feeding the heater you want to change, come back and tell us the rating...

Meter box with hinges on the right

The standard meter box will work upside down, but the profile of the top and bottom are different so may not shed rainwater as well and may leak. Also the marked out cable entry positions will be wrong, but you can probably live with that. If the back board has marked meter positions etc...

Upstairs landing light either randomly flashes or stays on half brightness.

No you had a cowboy. I hope he replaced the probably missing grommet in the hole of the back box and sleeved any damage with proper sleeving not a bit of tape. Calling it "insulation tape" is a misdemeanour Have you recently changed the lamps perhaps for a different type?

GOV.UK advice on Rented properties for smoke alarms.

DO NOT FIT FIRE ANGEL, you will regret it. * In Scotland the regs are clearer, they must be interlinked, and that can include wireless interlinking, and they can be mains powered or battery powered as long as the battery has a 10 year life. * I have now come across 2 sets of Fire Angel "10...

    downlights in this ceiling

If there is no access to above the ceiling, just how do you propose drilling holes in the rafters and feeding cables through. Tell the customer it is not possible and go on the the next, easiest, job.

    "Badged" consumer units .....

Put three Wylex MCB's together a decade or more apart, you will see the same. Ditto MK and Crabtree and probably many others. That is why I like Hager so much, they don't keep messing about with the design. I have said before it is often possible to get a "wrong" make that fits better into an...

    French Power

Is their "neutral" connected to earth, or is there some sort of centretapped arrangement, in which case your "live" could be only 110V wrt earth.

    "Badged" consumer units .....

About the same era, there was another one, Marbo, also a badged Wylex board. I think Screweys sold them. My take is it is the "manufacturer" that matters. Since neither Marbo or Sector actually made them, the manufacturer was Wylex. So I would have no hesitation fitting a Wylex part into it...
