    New member looking to re-train

Have a look on Amazon for books by Brian Scaddan, there are few on various tops that are not to expensive. They normally have examples of calculations and how to approach typical exam type questions...

Showing your age there. Early 1980's. So it's very probable that anyone under 35 hasn't got a clue what you are on about!  Those of us who are older will be just chuckling away in the background.  They did the first "Red-Nose-Day" single with 'Sir Cliff' (Living Doll) which was brilliant IMHO...

    New member looking to re-train

The best solution as I see it is to keep your existing job, plus its income to pay the bills for as long as is possible, while getting as many qualifications as evening courses as possible, (as far as I know, C&G qualifications are the widest recognised within the industry),  Plus seeing if...

    Ford focus electrical issue

Hello Luke, welcome to the forum. Unfortunately you may not get much help here, as this forum is mainly relating to Industrial / Commercial / Domestic AC mains electrical supplies. The are a few members who have some involvement with lower voltage DC auto-electrics. But you would probably get a...

    Intermediate switch wiring

If you can't understand the concept of how intermediate switch wiring works from this drawing and how to apply it to your arrangement then you will probably need to employ someone who does understand. But I will ask again;  (1) Has it ever worked?  (2) have any of the switches been replaced...

    Intermediate switch wiring

Has it ever worked correctly, and/or has someone replaced any of the switches that control this light in the recent past? If it has never worked it is possible that has just never been connected correctly, or it may be that when originally wired someone forgot to put in adequate cables to allow...

On the subject of EV's ...........

How do electric vehicles fair with window de-misting and heating?  I recall seeing a couple of Nissan Leaf's during the cold weather before Christmas on the Motorway with very steamed up windows. Those functions must take a toll on the battery. Doc H.

    wiring a spur to fcu

If the circuit is supplied from a 32A (or 30A), protective device, have you confirmed that the socket with three cables does actually have two cables that are an intact ring circuit? if not then NO you can't. Doc H.

    Travel time/costs

Another school of thought is that 99.99% of average workers who attend any office/factory/shop/etc have to get to their place of work at their own expense in their own time, typically somewhere between 30mins to 1hour. So taking an average max allowance of 45mins each-way, in your own time, at...

On the subject of EV's ...........

There's a you tube video where six EV's were driven till the batteries were flat to compare real world range with quoted range. Also you find out what the vehicle does when the power has gone. Some you could still push, but one had its breaks locked on IIRC.  Doc H.

    Shed/Out house supply

Adding new circuits will require Part-P compliance notification, plus someone signing declarations on the electrical certificate to confirm it complies with current wiring regulations. Bottom is that an understanding of what the customer would like, should be taken into consideration, But its...

    TT Earthing issue

I suspect you may be trying to follow guidance for TN systems (e.g. 411.4). Whereas TT systems have separate guidance in Chapter 41 protection against electric shock. Think how the existing circuits could be meeting the requirements of BS7671, or are you suggesting that the whole installation is...

    Sawdust as insulation

If it is just normal sawdust I would have been just as worried about any damp  and moisture being absorbed by it. A dripping pipe joint could accumulate a very damp patch of sawdust surrounding it.  Bet the mice love it for making nests in. Doc H.

Can’t work our where switch lines go!

If using push fits the single grey 8 terminal wago, should be 3x yellow 2 terminal wagos. Doc H.

Maintenance engineer role requirements? Is it possible to switch to this from Installation?

Are you sure its not just a very big wire-wound resistor? I am just trying to work out the value from the coloured bands; Grey/Brown/Brown/Grey/Brown/Diagonal Red/Grey/Brown/Grey/Brown/Brown. I think the tolerance is +/- 1% but the exact value is stumping me at the moment? Doc H.

    Changing sockets and switches

    Yes, I mis-read that point. Doc H.

Maintenance engineer role requirements? Is it possible to switch to this from Installation?

Assuming these jobs you have applied for give a specification of the type of qualifications and experience they are looking for, And you meet that criteria, then it must be just the fact that there is a large quantity of similar qualified and experienced people out there also applying for the...

    Changing sockets and switches

It was 1966 when a CPC was required for lighting circuits.   See page 9 of Best Practice guide 1.  https://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/media/2146/bpg1.pdf   However if you read the OP's original post there would appear to be CPC's present at this installation. So I suspect it not pre 1966...

    DNO/energy supplier

If this tenant has been tampering with the electricity then its possible it could need some remedial work to make it safe to re-energise. Also BS7671 recommends electrical installations in rented dwellings are inspected and tested every five years or change of occupancy. So I would have thought...

Heads up on Immersion heater fault?

Sorry Sir Kerch, AKA 'Forum Grand Lord Of Common Sense', I fear that health & safety may no longer allow the use of a kettle due to the risk of scalding, or taking an unscheduled break for Tea or Coffee! Possibly one of the last EU directives before the Boris Brexit Bus reached its terminus...
