    RIP Neil Innes.

A very talented and possibly underrated songwriter/musician has left us before 2019 has closed its doors. Older members who appreciate the musical contributions to Monty Python will understand the loss. But for any younger forum members this link may help explain things a bit more; ...

Any others thinking the same I wonder?

I think we can easily forget that although BBC TV started 1936, (ITV 1955),  BBC2 didn't start broadcasting until 1964, Colour TV wasn't until 1967, Satellite & Digital TV didn't start until 1998, and the Digital TV changeover didn't complete until 2012,. so those early years of television...

    Circuit breaker randomly tripping

We need far more detail about exactly what is tripping,  MCB, RCD, RCBO ?  And swapping the device is extremely unlikely to resolve anything. The item that is disconnecting the power is almost certainly doing exactly what it is designed to do when it has detected a fault. You need to establish...

So what's the latest Whirlpool Washer fire issue?

In true pantomime fashion, "oh yes it is".  (said the man from whirlpool). https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-50811686 Doc H.

    Hive heating install problem

Incorrect flex, using a CPC as a live conductor is my first observation, after which I lost interest. Anyone using incorrect cable/flex for a job should probably be seeking professional help rather than a bodged up attempt where they cannot appreciate the guidance of correct cable identification...

    Electric power more sustainable than...

One of the fundamental problems with the benefits system is that those who are devious and want to play the system can obtain cash that they can spend on non-essentials. I would have thought that in our modern computerised world it would not be beyond the realms of possibility to ensure...

Thinking of starting your own Business as a Soletrader? Electrician or Electrical co?

Welcome to the forum Kennyd147, This thread dates back from not long after the forum was originally started. (also, there was a problem with the link not working back in 2009 if you browse some of the comments). However since then the forum has had a change of ownership and was moved to...

Getting involved with CU change that may not have c.p.c's for circuits?

For that size of 6way Wylex, Screwfix have a reasonable off-the-shelf 6xRCBO equipped BG unit, which is not too extortionate. And as Evans says, any minor savings you may get from a Dual RCD board is not worth the inconvenience if anything starts tripping later. e.g. you don't want a bit of old...

Hiding A Cable Behind Architrave And Door Frame

These would appear to be the same beasts, not personally seen them in real life before, but they appear to be supplying pre-equipped units with surge protection adjacent to main switch. https://cpelectric.co.uk/ https://cpelectric.co.uk/shop/...

Getting involved with CU change that may not have c.p.c's for circuits?

Even if we assume a property is in desperate need of a full rewire, the point that some electricians forget is that BS7671 makes no stipulations about how long any job may or may not take. e.g. a full rewire may be done in one go over the shortest timescale possible, or it may be implemented...

    pat testing tactile buttons

I think you will find most modern TV,s are double insulated, as such there will be nothing to test in relation to earth continuity or leakage to earth. So other than a visual check and confirming the correct fuse is in the plug there isn't a fat lot to check in relation to Portable Appliance...

PLEASE HELP PLUG FOUND IN CHIMNEY BREAST?????

I have seen decorative lights fitted in or around chimneys, e.g. mini spot lamps angled down onto a wood burner, to give a "warmer illuminating effect" during summer months when the burner is not in use. But, those also had a suitably accessible switch to turn them on/off, not just a socket...

LED ...... The answer to everything .......or are they ?

I wonder what the real carbon-footprint comparisons are between a traditional 'less energy efficient lamp', with cheaper production and no fancy electronics to make the light work -vs- Energy efficient low running costs but high manufacturing and replacement costs, possibly 18months or less...

Separation of water pipes from meter...

That is a valid point. in fact I could even see a defence for the Gas man here. All good intentions to run the pipe around the CU. But after spending more than 10 minutes in the vicinity of the carpet, obviously his (or her), brain cells, and logical train of thought would be completely mashed...

    Builders extension lead

That will be a PME extension lead, think Screwits or Twatstation may be stocking them, google "Builders 25m Lead" I think they are called? It saves the builder stressing if it gets damaged, as they come "pre-damaged" So builder is happy and thinks everything is normal and good. Doc H.

Separation of water pipes from meter...

I was so distracted by the carpet it took nearly 50minutes for me to notice the gas pipe! Did you need trauma rehabilitation after being in close proximity to that pattern? Doc H.

Separation of water pipes from meter...

No.  You need to ask yourself what code you intend writing  on your EICR?  What sort of perceived danger or risk have you assessed is present? Do the cables have bare exposed live conductors nearly touching a metal pipe? Is there any immediate action required, or urgent action, or further...
