    anyone good with lathes?

Thanks Geoff, I was wondering if there needed to be a load on it. Perhaps a 110v lamp or something.

    anyone good with lathes?

to start with I was getting about 68vdc. I found a manual which gave the procedure for setting up the brake but gave no coil specs. The PSU is supposed to be variable, turn up voltage pot until brake releases, note voltage, turn up 6v more then lock the pot. Unfortunately, after replacing the...

    anyone good with lathes?

excellent. thanks how did you arrive at that figure by calcs or have you found info for that machine?

    anyone good with lathes?

Sidey, its been a huge learning curve. I found out today that its been playing up for ages. I have discovered that the 73v ac supply from the transformer at the top centre of the panel supplies the psu via the yellow cables. The blue cables seem to be the contacts to initiate the DC.  The...

    anyone good with lathes?

Not sure the DC injection braking would work properly on this machine. The motor starts as soon as you turn the machine on. the internal clutch then starts the chuck rotating. The DC would only kick in when the motor stopped. The brake needs to be on every time the chuck stops. there is also a...

it would be a C3 as far as I'm concerned as it was installed under previous regs and was deemed acceptable when installed after all its not retrospective is it?

    anyone good with lathes?

Managed to find a free download of the manual. Not a lot of help in terms of voltage rating of coil etc. I did find out that the PSU is not working correctly either. So need PSU and coil.

    anyone good with lathes?

Thanks Geoff, not about to pay for a manual, I'm not SE so its up to the owner. I am thinking the semiconductors are some kind of voltage regulator. The power supply has AC on the input side all the time and only when the lathe is running does the DC side kick in to release the chuck. It would...

    anyone good with lathes?

The power supply in the bottom centre of the panel is for the brake unit. Brake coil is cooked, no information available. Getting one made but they need to know voltage. PSU for brake is fed from a 73V winding on transformer which also provides 110v control voltage for rest of machine. I...

    'eres something I never understood.

    anyone good with lathes?

turned out ( see what I did there?) to be the brake unit coil cooked. trouble is they are like gold dust so lathe might be finished if they cant get one!
