    Hi all

    Welcome to the site.

How do you check circuits in a house after installing a new fuse box?

As Murdoch has said. cct 2 is a final ring circuit. He has obviously started fault finding, so you obviously get him back or get another spark to find the faulty point in the circuit. It just needs a bit of time to track the cables and find the offending area. I would also suggest when you...

How do you check circuits in a house after installing a new fuse box?

Well it looks a tidy job. This must have been before the electrician started on the faulty cct 2!

How do you check circuits in a house after installing a new fuse box?

Or, its an open circuit ring and he has disconnected the half circuit with the fault on!!

    Back of light switch

You could put a meter across contacts to check switch connections

Back box too full for light switch to go on?

The single cooker (deep) dry lining back box and Wago’s are the way forward here.

I am replacing a dimmer with a smart one. Can I do some clean up in this back box?

It looks like loop through wiring termination and no earth. It wouldn’t make to much mess putting a deeper back boy in. Use a multi tool and jest spend a little time on it,

    Tracing an Earth Cable

You are right with your theory, but as above “Safety is the key issue here, Working live is normally a last resort and definitely with the correct safety in place and a proper meter with correct test leads and probes.

    Irony

The earth return impedance must be lower at the far end, if the person is the grounding element/conductor

    Irony

My point really is. With a long extension lead and the Zs being well out of its spec at the socket, would the RCD at the house operate under fault conditions if the person using it managed to get himself between phase and earth? If he had an RCD in the extension socket at the end of the lead...

    Tracing an Earth Cable

I think if you are unsure about this call a professional. Working live is a last resort and really is a job for professionals equipped with the right tools, knowledge and safety protection kit.

    Tracing an Earth Cable

Or check phase to earth with a volt meter, confirming the earth is there at every appliance and also polarity and you don’t need to disconnect any connections.

    Irony

So, on a long extension lead where would you put the RCD, at the source to protect the lead or at the socket to protect the person?

    RCD tripping problem

Or is the type of RCD wrong. Is there a DC element involved?

Weird wiring in ex-council flat in London

Pyro. Big in the sixty‘s, as somebody said earlier there is a real art to making it off but once made off just about bomb proof and wont cause any problems unless disturbed or someone puts a nail through it!
