    Unconventional termination of SWA

Screwits were before my time! I'm not familiar with Wagos, still think in terms of terminal blocks... I assume they are some sort of fast to use, click a lever to close version of a terminal block? I agree standards (sometimes) get better, sometimes just more bureaucratic! I do recall the...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

Good points, I'd only do this were mechanical strain wasn't an issue, ie, cable was fully cleated to the location on the other side of a wall high up with no realistic chance of the cable being pulled.  Armour would be split into 2 equal bundles, twisted, sleeved, run and terminated next to...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

I acknowledge it's not the accepted norm & today, due to the far more stringent regime, part P etc. I'd not consider doing it, but back in the day, yes I did it when the situation seemed appropriate. Maybe it was incorrect, but I don't see how, and no one has yet come up with a valid reason...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

I suspect you are correct, but I don't see how the way I did this would cause any sort of danger. I accept it's considered bad practice by many and it may not have complied with all relevant regulations at the time. If I were practicing today, I'd certainly not do it, but I've still yet to...

Thank you for the constructive feedback, good points.

    Unconventional termination of SWA

@ Sidewinder, Just looked up most of those regs, pretty subjective stuff to be honest... @ Murdoch, Stop being obnoxious, who are you to call me a chancer, If you don't want to have a polite discussion, mind your own business.

    Unconventional termination of SWA

An actual reason!, thanks for that, so looks like I was wrong after all back in the day :)

    Unconventional termination of SWA

So, you have an existing plastic CU, it's on a beautifully tiled wall and you need to get a SWA into it that's running up the other side of the wall. Without making a hideous mess of the customers decor, the cable is going to have to come through the wall through the back of the unit. Would you...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

So, in the case of the cable entering from the rear of the unit, you have the brass SWA gland within the unit, yes? Well fine, but again, give me an actual reason why this is better than what I've suggested, either electrically, or for other reasons other than, "it's just not how it's meant to...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

Again though, give me a reason why this is bad practice, other than you don't like it. I agree, made off badly it would look a mess. None of my work ever looked a mess, it was always exceptionally neat. Why is a direct connection to an earth block worse than going through several connections to...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

Well I think I still am an electrician lol!, although haven't practiced since 1994, so yes, I'm very out of the loop. @ Andy, There's an answer I was expecting! So tell me why this is so much worse for small SWA than having a large brass gland rattling around inside a plastic CU (if the cable...

    Unconventional termination of SWA

I suppose it's academic now as if installing a new circuit in SWA to a CU, it seems the current regs would require a change of said CU to metal clad anyway. Is that correct? I am a bit rusty lol!!
  13. P

    Unconventional termination of SWA

Here's one for you all..... I've been retired from the electrician game for over 20 years now, but back in the day when using smaller sizes of SWA that needed to be terminated into a plastic enclosure CU I'd often treat the cable like a concentric with regard to dealing with the armour. I'd...

    16A Commando socket question.

Which is a ridiculous and non enforceable regulation as joe public will happily plug in 2, 13A appliances, blissfully ignorant of this restriction!

    16A Commando socket question.

Yep, It's crazy. I've decided it's staying exactly as it is now lol!!

    16A Commando socket question.

Regs say (unless 18th edition has altered this!) 1, 16A on a radial circuit should be a protected at 16A,, multiple 16A can be on a radial protected at 20A, so that's OK, just no specifics on mixing socket types, but doesn't state you can't!

    16A Commando socket question.

Thanks for the replies. Not really worried about it, just curious if it is to regs. Never come across it before. Of course definitely wouldn't comply if on a 32A ring, but as the circuit is a 20A radial it sits OK with regs for protection at least. Shutter may be a good point. I wonder if it's...

    16A Commando socket question.

Thanks for the quick feedback! Can't though, the SWA feeding the garage is only 2.5mm and the length of run is borderline for voltage drop with a 20A, so I'm stuck with it, as I'm not digging up 25M of block paving and concrete to upgrade it. lol!! It's protected at the main CU in the house with...

    16A Commando socket question.

New here so hello everyone. I have a stupid question for you all. Would like to know the answer from a safety point of view as well as current compliance point of view. I am a qualified electrician but left the profession way back in 1994 for a more lucrative profession, so rusty to say the...
