Well, the kids found it funny.....

I worked on the Presel offices, computer rooms in the late 70's & early 80's. It was  a BT business run from Baynard House  at Blackfriars London Luton airport we had to wear CUT 5 gloves in the main contractors areas. That meant putting on the gloves to cross a corridor, once inside our...

    Domestic rewire - anyone?

We fill chases with bonding but leave  final finish  to customer. Seems i was in the  right area price wise.

    Domestic rewire - anyone?

70's house probably means chipboard floors which are a pain in the neck.  4.5 k is about right, we would charge that at a minimum plus vat. Your just a little too far for me to pop over if your after the cheapest  quote as i would be happier with 5-5.5 k + vat  but include smokes aerial points etc

Best way to connect new LED light to existing wiring

Get adhesive/glue lined heat shrink and also wrap in self amalgamating tape, not insulation tape

    EICR - C1 x1 + C2 x2 Please help!

I thought earthing in lighting circuits & bonding came in with the 14th edition, which was 1966. It seems strange a 70s house has none ? Biggest problem in 70s houses is asbestos artex.

Best way to connect new LED light to existing wiring

I have never seen a ground light that you could disconnect like you have. They are normally  sealed units with a long lead.  Anyhow i hate those  things, they will let water in and blow, its just when.  I try to talk customers out of using them and ask them to supply the items if they are still...

MCB to fit LAP consumer unit

5 odd years ago we fitted 2, 32 way Wylex 3 phase boards to a very large house. I fitted all Logic Rcbo's (1/3 the price) & Logic main switches, then removed the Wylex badge  😉

    Shower circuit breaker

As above, now my bit, a Wylex RCBO will fit in there but on dome earlier boards of that style  rcbo's dont fit in the first 3 ways  due to the neutral bar being in the way. The shower circuit could be swapped to  a spare way , however all circuits should be rcd protected  and the board is...

Congestion & emission charging comes to Birmingham

We have had to do that before in central London on small callout jobs. Knowing its almost impossible to find a parking  space and vans height dont always fit  in multistorey car parks, also  somthing like £5 for 15 min around Oxford St i have dropped my mate off and just hang around on yellow...

Congestion & emission charging comes to Birmingham

Used to it living in London. The next thing that WILL happen everywhere-has started in Westminster & Islington Boroughs is an additional £2.50 per hour in addition to normal fees  to park any diesel  vehicle. On street or council car parks

I'm Looking to get electricity in my detached garage that is down the road.

This question has popped up here a few times and generally, unless its a business its cost prohibitive. In N London new supplies start at £1000 &  in addition you have to dig trenches, fit ducts  etc anywhere not public property.

Turning off the mains on an Accenta G4 Alarm system.

I meant the light switches, not the battery-but thats worth a pic also. I have seen them plugged in reversed

Turning off the mains on an Accenta G4 Alarm system.

Take pictures of all the connections on the back of every switch  before disconnecting anything, but even so i bet you will be back here asking as at least one wont work  😀

    Main Earth size

So only 2 people are prepared to say  what  size cable they note on a certificate, the cable on the consumers side of the MET or the suppliers side ?
  18. SLIPSHOD & SLAPDASH

    Main Earth size

To keep things clear lets forget about TNCS for now & only TNS. Apart from where a 951 clamp has been fitted  i have never  seen anything bigger than 4mm (but imperial) cable, usually 2.5 soldered on. Even with a 951 clamp on a older install this may only have a 4-6 or 10mm cable connected...

    Main Earth size

When compiling a EICR or Installation cert what do you fill in for the main earth size when usually a 16mm cable has been taken to the MET but (again usually) the suppliers short cable is 2.5-4 mm ?  This would normally only arise with a TNS supply
