2 gang switch with a lot going on

Hi all, On my way home today I was asked to pop into a new customer and have a quick look at a lighting fault. I'm still learning, but have a pretty solid grasp on testing, and reasonably on it with fault finding, so I was happy to see what I could sus out in a brief visit, before we made an...

    NVQ lvl3 revision help

My tutor just replied confirming that the part Yea I've just had a message from my tutor, one's a mistake, and one's an open book mock. I'm relieved. I'm happy to do what it takes, but that seemed beyond me

    NVQ lvl3 revision help

From the company I'm doing the training with, the tutor did say the mocks are a lot harder than the real tests, but this is a bit crazy. I'm going to drop them a message, while I get you should remember certain numbers and values, memorizing every charts does seem a bit wild

    NVQ lvl3 revision help

Hi guys, I'm currently working on revision for my level 3 NVQ, I've been given some mock exams to run through. Almost all of the exams are closed book, and there are questions that have me stumped. eg. What is the grouping factor for 7 circuits? What is the tripping time for a 6a BS88 fuse at...

Testing Ze on Separate earth rod

Glad to hear my thoughts shared. No matter how positive I am that I've done a perfect job, the thought of F-ing up through overlooking something scares the **** out of me still.

Testing Ze on Separate earth rod

I thought the same, but I couldn't think of a better comparison. Maybe 702 is being a bit over cautious. But rather over than under. The specs for the tub did include recommendations for a rod... That's all making sense, if the customer had just asked for a socket, then I wouldn't have...

Testing Ze on Separate earth rod

But my understanding would be that you could have the RCD protecting the ring as the protection for the TT'd socket Fair enough, but I state PME due to TNS & TNCS being assumed PME in reference to PEN faults, so I look at it in the same vein as old EV installations. Customer was told under no...

Testing Ze on Separate earth rod

Hi lads, We turned down a job today that has got me thinking. Customer wanted a new single socket for a hot tub, we wanted to take a spur from the interior ring, into a rotary isolator, then into a single socket for the tub. Pic attached. Earthing is currently PME, so I wanted to add an earth...

Designing a distribution circuit to power board

"This question hasn't been solved yet!" I'm glad to see I'm not the only one stuck :ROFLMAO:

Designing a distribution circuit to power board

Hi guys, Here to bother you with another boring design question. I am running through my design course and doing great so far. I've just completed all of the required lighting circuits, so I'm good with Ib<In<It, calculating SWA as protective conductor, adiabatic requirements, etc. I have...

    Grouping factors - Circuit design

Hi Guys, I have a question about derating for grouping factors. I understand how to use Cg (etc..) and why. But what would be the maximum run of grouped cables to not have a derating factor applied? eg. cables leaving the rear of a CU could be grouped for a very short run, possibly only ~50mm...

    PEFC - Design Vs testing

I'm guessing I did a poor job of that, I'll be clearer in the future. Thanks again

    PEFC - Design Vs testing

This perfectly sorts my confusion. Thank you. I suppose i was wondering why we don't physically record fault currents at the end of a circuit, like with the PEFC/PSCC tests at the origin, but as you say the Zs covers that. Also, am I understanding correctly that the Ia is the fault current...

    PEFC - Design Vs testing

Hi guys, I might be having a brain fart on this one, but can anyone enlighten me on this one: (Stop me if I'm talking bum at any point) When designing a circuit you calculate the R1+R2, add it to the Ze, end up with Zs. You then do Uo x Cmin ÷ Zs to get your PEFC. So you have a PEFC based off...

    Full EICR after CU change?

No, it was completely hypothetical, I just got chatting with him

    Full EICR after CU change?

This was my basic thinking, he was adamant that you basically do both an EIC and an EICR, in so many words, as separate entities. As I say I'm still at the start of my learning, so I didn't argue, just questioned. Just thought I'd check. Thanks guys

    Full EICR after CU change?

Hi guys, I was talking to an electrician recently and we got chatting about consumer unit changes (I'm training currently so thought I'd pick his brains), and he mentioned something that I was unsure about. He said after you do a CU change, you HAVE to do a full condition report of the entire...

    Are they really qualified?

Ah I've seen this mentioned, so you could run jus line and neutral in metal conduit and use the conduit itself as the CPC? (I know we're going off subject for the thread, just interested)

    Are they really qualified?

Can I ask what you mean by this? I thought reference methods were just basically just accounting for the route the cable takes? (I'm still learning so genuine question)

    Are they really qualified?

There is nothing in the Regs that state you have to 'double over' the conductors in a socket
