    Thermostat controlled fan.

A local farmer has fitted a high volume 3 phase fan in the end of one of his chicken houses. He has asked if I can wire it up so that if the temperature of the shed gets to high the fan will kick in. Any suggestions on a robust method of achieving this. The thermostat control would have to be...

    Rusting back boxes.

Has anyone out there ever come across any stainless backboxes? I have a client who has a problem with damp in the walls. The ordinary galv boxes start rusting after a short while and stain the wallpaper. I have been given the task of replacing the worst ones and was just looking for an...

    EIC supply query

I have just completed a rewire on an old bungalow. The house has a 3 phase supply with a distribution board next to the meter outside. One phase serves the bungalow another serves a workshop and garage and the third goes down the garden to a granny flat. I have only worked on the bungalow on...

    On my own

Got to work on Monday, more redundancies announced, walked in the office and volunteered. I am now on my own, a self employed spark. I was hoping to do about a year of working on the side before taking the plunge. Fortunately over the last three years while I've been attending college I have...

    2 gang intemediate switches

Has anybody come across a range of switches that includes a full 2 gang intermediate switch? I have found some that have one side intermediate and the other 2 way but not both switches. I can get by with one of each but it would be a lot easier and use less cable if both were intermediate.

    More downlight problems.

Went to look at a job today. 7 downlights need replacing or refitting. The plaster around the hole is all chipped and broken and plaster board is visible around the light fitting. The job is for a local builder who did the whole extension on a price and contracted the electrics out to another...

    Supply protective device.

A quick certification question. I am filling in a installation cert for a detached garage. Is the supply device the breaker in the house board or still the main incoming fuse? Sorry if this is a basic question. I may have finished at college but I am still learning. Thanks OOTD

    Pir lighting

Evening lads, just a quick one. I have been asked to fit some outside lights, Four to be exact. I was going to put a new circuit on the rcd side of the CU. All lights are to be PIR switched, do they need to be individually isolated or is it ok just to wire them all together and isolate with the...

    Supply to metal shed.

I have been asked by a friend if I could put a socket and a light in their new shed. I thought this would be a nice little job for whichever scam provider I choose to go with to assess. Upon arrival I find its a metal shed. It stands on a concrete pad so would be a nightmare to TT it. What would...

    Pat C&G 2377

As the end of college draws ever nearer (last exam 25th march) I decided to do a quick PAT test course. We spent one full day on legislation and half the second day on the theory of testing. We then spend the second half of the day testing an old kettle with a Seaward IT1000 tester, on Tuesday...

    electrical separation

Morning, just got up and spent my obligatory time in the bathroom. Started thinking about the shaver socket. (How sad is that? College has a lot to answer for.) The 240v side is, I know, separated from the supply via a transformer and therefore is not connected in anyway to earth so I can safely...

    Napit Just 8

Does anybody know about the Napit just 8 scheme? I have seen it mention in other posts but can't find it on the Napit web site. As the end of my 3 years at college approaches (last exam on 25th of Feb) and the financial situation worsens I am not brave enough to plunge into the world of the...

    Limitation of discharge energy

I have been going over a few old question papers preparing for our next exam. Unfortunately they are all 16th edition, but most of the answers are the same only with a different Reg. number which is helping in preparation for doing the 17th edition exam as I am having to flick through regs book...
