Remedials for class 2 faults after inspection - Coventry

First post for a long time as I've retired! Thoroughly recommend it! My Son - who lives in Coventry has had a report done on a charity building. In fairness the  report is very good - but the cost for remedials is just plain offensive. Quoted to fix everything - no differentiation between class...

    TT and metal CU's

Advice from my NAPIT assessor today:- Tails need to be clamped above the main switch terminals. Hager do a clamping kit apparently. Clamping below the board on rear entry is not deemed good enough - even with 25mm tails. Surprised as I couldn't see a 25mm tail moving in a hurry. Cable entry...

    Intermittent Time Delay Rcd Failure

Had a pretty nasty fault at a caravan site. New caravan being put in place so the installers pulled out the hook up post (using a Land Rover or tractor I suspect) - and in doing so pulled the SWA sheath out of its gland - so live insulation cut through by the gland. Still earth contact on...

    What's The Difference?

When this forum was first set up it was the complete opposite of the Screwfix forum - supportive, fun, helpful - and when I was starting out on my own it was a lifeline. Now things seem to have changed - ask a question and if you don't know the answer you are incompetent. Pedantic, smug answers...

Electrical Backup For Domestic Hot Water

I've got a customer who is scared of losing hot water with an unreliable combi boiler. His solution is to install an electric shower in his shower cubicle along with his snazzy bespoke shower - and as I'd have to trunk the cable to it due to flat roof and laminate I think it would look awful...

    New Regs For Fire Alarms?

I've been told that there is some problem with new legislation requiring 3rd party certification of fire alarm panels - and because of this a lot of manufacturers are withdrawing a lot of their panels (from my own experience you can't get a Rafiki Twinflex 4 Zone Control Panel from most...

    E7 Neutral Switching

Hi - just been dealing with a 3 phase dual rate digital meter - and the control wire for E7 is switched to neutral to activate the E7 contactor. Surely this is not to BS7671!  Anyone had any experience of this?

    Biker Kiss

Earlier this year, a group of bikers were riding out when they saw a girl about to jump off the Humber Bridge . So they stopped. George, their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of gawkers, past the Policeman who was trying to talk her down off the...

    Anybody In Or Near Coventy?

If so my son has got problems with both economy 7 and burglar alarms in a charity project house - and is getting ripped off £70.00/hr by the alarm company who maintain the system once a year. Too far for me as I'm in Cornwall but if you feel you could take on the job PM me and I'll forward your...

How Does An Earth Loop Tester Work?

Sounds a stupid question but even forgetting about RCD's I can't get my head around this. I assume the measurement is derived from a sequence of tests where voltage is measured on no load (so v = line voltage) and then voltage is measured under load (L-E load) so it is like a potential divider...

Do You Know Who I Am?

It happened at a New York Airport. This is hilarious. I wish I had the guts of this girl. An award should go to the United Airlines gate agent in New York for being smart and funny, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. For all of you out...

    British Gas And Proteus

I was talking to a British Gas electrician at a job the other day (he was doing a vehicle charging point whilst I was doing outside lights) and he reckons that British Gas now exclusively use Proteus boards as they have upped their game and I assume there is a discount for British Gas. He...

    Employee Appraisals

THESE ARE "ACTUAL" QUOTES TAKEN FROM AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS. 1) "Since my last report, this employee has reached rock-bottom and has started to dig." 2) "I would not allow this employee to breed." 3) "This employee is really not so much of a has-been...

    How Can I Help You?

Two hours into my first day of work as a Wal-Mart greeter, an ugly woman came in with her two kids. Hearing her swear at them, I said, 'Good morning, welcome to Wal-Mart. Nice kids, are they twins?' The mom answered, 'Hell no, they ain't twins. The oldest one's 9, and the other one's 7. Why...

Thoughts on R1 + R2 on lighting circuits

Just a thought - generally we do R1 + R2 (or Zs) at the furthest light. It strikes me that with the loop in method this gives the longest length of line conductor - so max R1 - but we miss out the cpc to the switch - which may have a break in it. Would we better off doing R1+R2 at the furthest...

    Switch in wrong polarity!

Doing remedials after an NICEIC firm did a PIR on 1/9/12 (so what's this EICR business anyway!) Fault - switch in wrong polarity - level 2. Turns out switch was mounted upside down! 1960's/70's installation - all insulation >200M - yeah right 10M and 1.25M Fridge unable to be isolated -...

    Show him your badge

A DEA officer stopped at our farm yesterday "I need to inspect your farm for illegal growing drugs." I said "Okay , but don't go in that field over there.....", The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, " Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me!" Reaching into his rear...
