A couple of flats one above the other. I know in the flat above no one has been drilling holes or tinkering with sounders etc. The flat below I'm not sure. I'll have to check with them tomorrow. 

Hell no I'm not trying to fix it myself. I don't have a clue about fire alarm systems. I'm just trying to figure out what the problem could possibly be before I call an engineer. Unfortunately these days some people are ruthless and tell you there is something major wrong when it's a minor fix...

Is that not because I have muted the system panel? What are the sounders in the system? The smoke detectors? Or the one one system panel? I can upload the manual if people need it to make an analysis.
