Definition of 'Low Voltage' and PoE implications?

Being from a (mainly) digital electronics background I've rarely encountered dangerously high voltages. Sure, I've used plently of mains-powered PSUs in my time but anything more than 24v dc (more often +/- 12V) was bordering on the exotic! So, while most of my work involved 'intrinsically...

Whatever happened to that promise of 'electricity too cheap to meter' from the nuclear industry? 😂

smart meters & off peak pricing

seems to me that the first thing government should do is to remove the tax on electricity and gas (domestic at least). It has recently become abundantly clear (if it wasn;t already) that energy if a fundamental necessity of modern life, like food and water, and really should not be teaxed...

What's comes first EV connector or PV + batteries

What's the point of prioritising an EV charging system now when by your own admission you probably won't have an EV for about five years? Five years is a long time in this game - technology changes, EVs are still developing and who knows what might happen to energy prices? I don't think...

    13A sockets for EVs

The resistors are used for 'signalling', they are not actually in the charging circuit itself. It's a widely used technique for configuring the connection between all manner of devices when there are many variations. The USB standard, for example, does something very similar.

    13A sockets for EVs

I suppose it's possible his need was greater then yours, perhaps he was rushing to see a dying relative etc, but I take your basic point and it's likely he was just a knob. But I wonder who will be the first victim of "charger rage" murder as we've already seen with "road rage"? Some people...

    13A sockets for EVs

I've read that the Tesla charging points/app will start charging you for 'idle time' if you leave a fully charged car connected. I think the app alerts you when fully charged and you get something like 10 mins grace before they start charging you. Seems like a good way to dissuade people from...

    13A sockets for EVs

I recently bought a welder and it came with a 'heavy duty' 13A plug, presumably in recognition that 'standard' ones are not up to the job. Curiously though, it wasn't actually fitted to the welder - it was supplied with no plug actually fitted so couldn't be used straight out of the box. Not a...

    13A sockets for EVs

What about those blue 16A plugs/sockets ( can't remember their proper name)?. I use them in my workshop for a welder and a compressor, where a 13A plug/socket is a little too 'lightweight'. They really need a dedicated circuit though. Not sure if they'd be robust enough for many hours of EV...

    EV charger

True, though I would argue it's the 'always looking ahead' mentality that means people are ready to take advantage of the 'occasional lucky break' that comes their way. I guess this is what is meant by making your own luck and we all know that some people are luckier than others, or rather that...

    EV charger

Interesting article, I didn't know that, though that's why I said 'serious' about EVs. 'Serious' in the sense of EVs being in the public consciousness, governments actively encouraging EVs through tax breaks and legislation, and EVs being widely available to the consumer, etc. But if we're...

Complete beginner looking for some basic pointers

That's very interesting! The parents of one of my son's friends are heavily into solar power and have installed a very large PV ground array and also run two Teslas. They are currently planning a battery system and have concluded that second-hand Nissan Leaf's are the way to go as they are...

So is this the Answer to all our problems?

Most likely cost. There's all manner of advanted tech in labs around the world but they are simply not economic to exploit. Yet. The times change along with the economics and puts a new light on old things. PV panels have been around for decades but have only become truly economic...

    EV charger

Depends what you mean by 'the loads are too much'. Heavy plant certainly needs powerful engines but I doubt that the prime mover aspect (ie ICE vs electric motor) is the problem. After all, we've had electric trains for decades so there should be little doubt that and electric motor can...

    EV charger

Exactly. I've never really understood the 'but I'm a miner, where am I going to find another job' mentality. I know Tebbut was ridiculed for his 'get on your bike' comments int he 80s but the fact remains that no one is owed a living and you have go go find your own way to earn a living...

Thing is, electric vehicles are generally much faster than ICE ones so the Golf EV might well be faster than a Porsche ICE anyway. As you say, very different machines.

    EV charger

I don't think anyone disputes that oil is a valuable material resource, only that it is damaging when used as an energy source. These things are not simply black and white as you imply. As for jobs, I spent my working life in an industry that didn't exist when I was at school...
