A few questions on wiring practices

Two meters... hilarious! If they connected your neighbour's house to your feed, presumably they wouldn't do the joint within your property boundary? And one would fully expect them to use the 100% correct duct etc outside that boundary.

A few questions on wiring practices

Interesting; thanks. Confirms my other info. You were without power for a few days? At which point do they cut off the old 1ph supply? They could leave it connected until the last moment, but not really if they are to repair the road in several stages afterwards. Do they cut it off at the...

" the cable and meter are spear are entities. " That's nonsensical English.

A few questions on wiring practices

How can you get a connection to a cable in the street and a 3ph meter installed "on the side"? Actually you probably could. The billing is exactly the same and works purely on what the meter readings are. I had 3ph in my last house and the pricing was identical to 1ph.

A few questions on wiring practices

In case someone comes across this thread one day: Today I bumped into some UK Power Networks guys and asked them. With a description of the job (posted above), they reckoned - cost should be about 2k - they need a cabinet for the 3 fuses and meter and a piece of plywood in it to screw these...

A few questions on wiring practices

Yes, I can fully see that, but why then do you spend any time helping people on an internet forum to start with? People should get a life, and participate only if they want to help somebody. Not moan that by answering questions they are losing money not getting work. I guess all the...

A few questions on wiring practices

The level of personal abuse here, levelled at somebody who expressed personal views etc but didn't attack anyone else here, is impressive. As someone involved in running certain online sites for years, I hope the mods here are suitably proud.

A few questions on wiring practices

The current feed looks like a coaxial cable and the neutral of it is connected to the earth in the house, so not TT. Also there is no earth rod anywhere. The earth is also bonded to various water pipes. However this feed will become redundant when 3ph goes in, so it will depend on what the power...

A few questions on wiring practices

Let me put the questions again. These are questions i.e. things I don't know :) What sort of stuff are they looking for in terms of connecting their meter to? Is it enough to provide them with a nice cabinet, with space at the bottom for the meter, and with the four 25mm2 wires, plus a 16mm2...

A few questions on wiring practices

There is a 3 phase cable running about 3m from the property boundary, and this is about 10m from where the meter would be. That cable is about 2-3" OD. There is a property about 10m away from our property boundary which already has 3 phase. So I doubt it would be more than a few k, especially if...

A few questions on wiring practices

OK; thanks. I will go for Plan B for the supply - dig 50cm down in the garden. What sort of stuff are they looking for in terms of connecting their meter to? Is it enough to provide them with a nice cabinet, with space at the bottom for the meter, and with the four 25mm2 wires, plus a 16mm2...

A few questions on wiring practices

Thank you all again. My comments above on trade practice are from actual experience. Somebody I know has a 2nd house which is rented out. I don't know if this makes a difference (an EICR may or may not be needed depending on # of occupants perhaps) but every electrician has flatly refused to do...

OK, fair enough, feel free to attack a new poster. I know the scene well; it's no problem. In the meantime, someone might post some useful info.

A few questions on wiring practices

Thanks everyone. Yes I am well aware that DIY wiring is legal etc and noncompliance with current regs does not make the house "illegal" in any way. You might get a funny survey if you want to sell it :) Didn't they change the wire colour from white to grey to make DIY wiring obvious? There...

A few questions on wiring practices

Thanks Evans Electric. That makes sense; they prefer to have the meter in a box outside nowadays and I can see they don't want to go inside the house. I have just walked past a building site where an electrician was terminating a load of 16mm2 SWA with the resin filled joints (done plenty of...

A few questions on wiring practices

DIY electrical wiring for about 50 years. Rewired several houses in that time. Did two when aged 13 and 14 - it's about as far from rocket science as one can get. A degree in electronics so obviously know how the stuff works but not done any electrician courses. The work is most definitely...

A few questions on wiring practices

To add more detail to Q3: does the power company care if the house wiring is not 18th Edition compliant? In other words, can you get 3 phase connected up without having a potentially extensive rewiring job?

A few questions on wiring practices

Hi All :) Background: electronics engineer, done tons of DIY electrics wiring including SWA stuff to outbuildings etc, and 3 phase many years ago. Q1: We have a single phase supply. The fuse used to be 80A. One day we got a letter from Seeboard offering to upgrade it for free. So we went...
