    Feeding cable through insulation

The conduit has a lower rating to add in to your calculations. Without having any figures no-one else can really tell you what is safe and correct to use but conduit will mean less resistance and heat them through the insulation.

    Feeding cable through insulation

When you chose the cable you needed to factor in the insulation basically put because of heat and increased resistance in you cable. BS7671 includes tables how to do this if you haven't or if you Google it they can be found elsewhere. If you use conduit the factor will be different as less heat...

    ECS card and IPAF

You can download the entire exam and just revise the questions and answers. They're multiple choice so you basically need to remember which one A-D is correct

    Outdoor socket

It needed more than a socket tester to check it before you made it live. Aside from saying get someone qualified in to check it and fix it I'd suggest you have got your cables mixed up so turn the power off and check they are correctly connected. Most likely the N and E are crossed which your...

Small shock when I touch metal light switches

Does anyone leave near them to call round and check they're OK?

    Outdoor socket

Have you done any testing of the circuit prior to adding it or tested the new socket in any way other than plugging something in? What was the result?

    Recommended Installer

I itemise the final bill so they can see what it's included but wouldn't on a quote for the reasons stated above and that prices are changing so quickly it's not worth the effort

Eicr and Aluminium Twin & Earth Cables

Without seeing it this sounds like the only reason for the c2 is the connections made at the cu? The actual wiring will have been compliant at the time (copper shortages in the 70s) and while not ideal is not potentialy dangerous or up to current standards any more than lots of historic items...

    RCD tripping

Were the lighting circuits on RCDs prior to the new ones being installed? Did you do an EICR before the work and what were the results for the lights?

    Codebreakers book

Very true about the Best Practice guide but it's not as thorough or wide-ranging as the Codebreakers book. Forr learners its not quite as effective to follow the trail back to BS7671 to find out why they think it should be a particular code which at the end of the day is what everyone should be...

    Codebreakers book

I think the responses give a good indication of the problem with getting the Codebreakers book. Not everyone agrees. I'd say its worth getting, if you can get a discount, when you're learning the ropes. It's a good learning tool but can't be used as your only source. Read its notes and see how...

Qualificstions for Membership Napit or NICEIC?

Probably just need to add the 2382 18th edition qualification (with amendment 2) to your list to show you are up to date

    Access Training

Does the course you are doing have a course code? It sounds like the 2391-52 but you mention learning over 2 years and to access that you should already have some sort of Level 3 qualification.

    Double dimmer switch

The wavy line / arrow (tilde symbol) is the common connection but I'd recommend getting an electrician for your own safety (ring around to compare quotes). The blue cable may be neutral or an unmarked switched live connection.

    2391-50 question

The IET publish an Exam Preparation (2391) book that's full of example questions

    Extending cables query

As BorisJ referred to above, the 450mm requirement is for New Builds under Approved Document M. For existing sockets it basically says that they are sited so there is no worse level of compliance than existed before. Moving them to comply would be a personal choice.

RCD trips when oven reaches temperature or induction hob turned on (intermittent).

When the RCD was replaced and you say the 'wiring' was tested what were the results? Were you given a record of these? RCD trip time, insulation resistance etc? When the 3rd electrician said it was a 'live to neutral' fault did he mean 'line to neutral' or was he talking about the neutral being...

    Electrical installation NVQ

Hi, when you say inspection and testing do you mean you've completed a 2391? I'm assuming so and my advice would depend on how available you are for work. I'd say to get the experience you're after you need to dive in. Any company worth their salt will buddy you up with someone more experienced...

    Surge Protection mandatory Sect 433

Hi, with AMD2 they've basically narrowed it as the cost of fitting them now is way below the possible cost, in domestic property, of damage to your large screen tv etc (and life obviously) 'Protection against transient overvoltages shall be provided where the consequence caused by over voltage...

You may already know about this site (link below) but it's a handy guide if a little dated in parts http://www.sparkyfacts.co.uk/Guide_to_the_AM2_Exam.html
