BT Open Reach - rant time

I even got caught out when my phone line dropped out, called Talk Talk who then contacted BT . They called to the house , put their test set in to the phone socket , phone line was fine. £60 thank you very much. Were now full fibre to the house with Vodafone.

Whats the strangest place you had a tingle - electric that is

Should replied earlier, the strangest place would have to be in the middle of a horse paddock whilst walking an HV line looking for a fault. Was climbing over a fence and noticed the insulator about half a second too late , talk about being black balled ! At least the linesman thought it was funny

Whats the strangest place you had a tingle - electric that is

This came from the fiscals office ( Scotland ) , as an electrician if you come across anything unsafe and you fail to do something to avert the danger to others and someone does get hurt, and as you are the “expert” and you failed to at least inform someone then you are liable to prosecution...

    Dry knuckle test

Wow pubs ! brings back memories , like cleaning fluorescent light diffusers that were orange with nicotine or that drip of nicotine on light bulbs or even the extract fans that were full of….nicotine and that fluff which stopped them from working.( once you cut your way through the cigarette...

    HNC question

Hi John Your HNC project will be easier if you pick something that is in your field of work just now, by that I mean something you can see being done at work just now and you can ask questions. My HNC project was done on an 11kV gas switchgear replacement. I went to the senior project engineer...

Upgrading home service from 60Amp to 100Amp

Agree here in central Scotland it was either 16mm copper, lead sheathed or 25mm aluminium concentric underground mains supply. Wirebacks ( and sometimes incoming overhead) could be old 10mm equivalent VIR with rewirable 30amp fuse carriers but normally 25mm concentric. The cablehead type is...

    ShinePhone Flummoxed!

Hi , you can configure the shinephone app to charge the battery overnight and then if the suns shining next day it will top up the battery till full then export to the mains. With Octopus it will depend on your import tariff , at present I am on the Octopus Agile tariff and generally overnight...

How to become a trade electrician

Hi Robint, As I ended up with my local network operator ( DNO) dont forget looking for a crafts apprenticeship with the local network company. The industry is going through a lot of change as the Maggie Thatcher days are bearing fruit with the 20 year gap of no apprentices. Most of the DNO,s are...

    Electrician moving over

Ahh but the call outs are where the money is, I certainly would not have the house or the pension I have if not for the standby work. My opinion is , if your able and fit and competent then do standby while you can, before you know it , you struggle to just stand up after kneeling down or pull...

    RFI From Inverter

I work contests with just 5 watts and manage to work Australia (VK) and New Zealand (ZL) most years, even in low sunspot years. I wonder if Ofcom ( or the BBC) will actually deal with RFI. I reckon the higher powers are Ofcoms mitigation of the higher noise levels we experience, they cant reduce...

    RFI From Inverter

That now looks better, As I said previously with my level of noise I can easily work around any noise issues and so should you. The noise reduction you refer to is the inverse square law where doubling the distance should reduce the intensity to a quarter.( I think) I can see a nice article in...

    RFI From Inverter

Well done, nearly choked when I read Ofcom are doing something positive for a change. It will be interesting to see what difference can be seen. Might be worth taking a bit of time to check all bands day and night again especially as the active sun is causing some radio blackouts attenuating...

    New cable

At one time I used to run a stanley knife down the earth to strip it, I wonder how much of the insulation would be left afterwards with this cable?

RCD Tripping for no apparent reason

Well the first thing I did as a first response from the REC was check incoming supply voltage to make sure it was within spec , if it was high incoming volts , this would be normally be overnight and very early in the morning. The transformers are very lightly loaded and the volts will creep up...

RCD Tripping for no apparent reason

Without testing circuits its a bit hit and miss . In addition to all the above, in all my years working with a REC as a first response I can honestly say its very rarely the incoming supply thats the issue

    Blue / Black Neutral?

First time I heard the term strappers I thought someone was pulling my leg, lighting circuits can have all sorts of colour combinations depending on who installed it , It was also the first time I heard the saying red to red, black to black ,and blue to …… At least it looks like all live or...
