So i have been to look at a commercial heating system,2 boilers various pumps, actuators etc. 2 shunt pumps behind the the boilers manually operated from rotary switches back at the control panel. Pump 1 works fine, when pump 2 is switched on the contactor trips and trip neon comes on. Please...
Hi guys, I have been self employed for 18 months now and am just about getting by. At first i was mostly subbing to people with the view to pick up my own work along the way. So i registered with elecsa and began to take on jobs. Before christmas the contracting work dried up and now i am...

Today went to a fault find where the 2 way lighting is playing up. All the switching is ok but when the upstairs is off but downstairs is on, There is 50v backfeeding up the neutral to the upstairs fitting? The practical effects of this is that the bulb will flicker every so often. The customer...
Have got to do a quote for a kitchen where i will need to replace 2 switched fused spurs directly above a sink drainer in the utility room. Is this acceptable for me to do or do they need moving? The circuit already has 30ma rcd protection.
Have never even heard of this boiler before but had to wire one up the other day and i cant get it to work, It has a large open terminal plate with lots of blocks to wire into. L,N,E, and in the instructions say it has 2 sw inputs, one for heating and one for water??? However it is a regular...
Yesterday i had a job to wire up a new dual fuel cooker. The installation was TT with an old elcb so i put a 30ma rcd on my circuit. This all went fine and whilst i was there i did the customer a 'favour' and removed a dodgy socket that had been extended to be mounted on the outside of some...
Im covering some work for a mate who is on holiday this week and its an 18th century mansion, listed building. The owners are doing the place up on a budget shall we say and my worm can opener is reaching its limit. I have been given a list of things to do and im trying to get through them the...
Hi i have read the previous threads but im just looking for an answer as to whether its ok to install downlighters in lath plaster ceilings. I know it will be a pain from an installation aspect but i want to know if its ok from a fire hazard point. I will be replacing the existing ones with fire...
A few pics from my phone,
The first one is just a random where i found this JB, reference method F for floating, the others are a partial rewire. I was there to do a quote for the bathroom, i decided i didnt even want my work in the same house as this guys. Very poor workmanship...
Hi, im doing a job to convert a dining room extension into a kitchen. There is a kitchen/diner ring existing which i will be extending and raising some sockets on etc. Straight forward enough but my dilemma is getting 30Ma rcd protection on the circuit. The C/U is currently a 3036 wylex board...
Had a call from Thomson local yesterday, offering ads in phone book, internet, google searches blah blah blah. Most of it went over my head but i do need to do some advertising. He said it was in conjunction with Elecsa who im registered with so it must be worthwhile, right!? Has anybody...
A friend of mine is giving away a japanese akita dog as he isnt a good guard dog for his farm. Was just wondering if anybody has any experience of these dogs and could give me some general info, health problems? Behavioural traits? etc. He is 8 months old, had his jabs, microchipped and well...
I have been considering doing a plastering course, so that when i quote for work i can mention that i can plaster if chases need skimming etc. Do any of you guys do your own plastering? Is this a good idea? I thought in these tough times it adds another dimension to the business if i can add a...
Can a 4mm, 3 core swa cable be jointed into a Standard patrice sized wiska box? Its just to extend it to reach a C/U. It also needs a banjo to earth the armour, but wasnt sure if there would be room for the gland as i have only ever used stuffing glands with this type of enclosure. Thanks.
Whilst wiring a heating system on behalf of British Gas, checking the earthing system i noticed that a 10mm earth had been connected to the neutral henley block. The earthing clearly was TT, and fed from overhead lines. I asked the customer about it as i thought it was probably bodged in by...
Been asked by a mate to come look at a job he has been doing,
System boiler, heating and water circuits + upstairs downstairs underfloor heating with four 2 port valves. And i think 2 or three pumps.
Now i have a good understanding of heating wiring normally but the only thing i cant work out...
Got a quote on bits for a rewire im doing and asked them to quote for crabtree for the accessories. Lady suggested the new Designa range, with sloped faces similar looking to MK. Has anybody fitted any of these, and got a an opinion on them?
Personally i am going off MK as i find, the terminal...
Went to a callout today to look at a commercial dishwasher that was not working, Turns out all it was was the breaker had tripped on the board and the chef thought it was on a different circuit. He also asked me to look at a big microwave oven that was pulling to much power for the ring that it...
Passed my elecsa assessment today, was so nervous but my assessor really made me feel at ease. And a big thankyou to everyone on here for all the useful threads that helped me prepare for it, and answering all my silly questions:)
