    I always rewire for Installation A without the ballast. Stops someone in the future putting a tube in the wrong way and knocking the whole circuit out

    I'm assuming one white wire will go to the ballast (Live), yellow possibly earthing the fitting somewhere (Earth)? and the remaining one would be (Neutral)? Just a guess

    There's a possibility the old fitting was screwed to a loose batton in the ceiling. This could have moved when you removed the old fitting.

    If you stick your finger in the hole where the cables come through (turn power off), you should hopefully be able to feel a joist where the fitting bracket will attach

    Sounds like you may have a dimming controller on the lighting.
