Hello

I am new to this, so be nice!

This morning I accidently cut through my 2 core cable in my loft and have found that it is the cable for my upstairs lighting, is there a quick fix or do I need to call in an electrician?

if it is 2 core that sugests theres no earth in lighting circuit id recomend getting the lighting circuit rewired, as a temporary fix you could connect it back together colour to colour, in a junction box. but if unsure pone a local sparks.

Jason , they are usually 2core +earth .   Buy a 10 amp junction box.......... SWITCH OFF.........  connect the wires together , colour to colour, ensure your terminals are firmly tightened up ,,,fit lid....SWITCH ON ..and all will be well .

If it isn't... phone Steptoe on 07&*+^%$£"

Thats fine then Jason , follow post #4   .. red to red ...black to black...bare earth to bare earth....just ensure you SWITCH OFF

If you don't ...I accept no responsibility whatsoever .

HEY,

dont be so uncouth young man,

he may well have a very nice sister,  :)

Welcome to the forum, As Blue Duck says Wagos are a quick push-fit connector which many electrician now prefer to the old connector strip or screw terminal junction box. But if you are using wagos you still need a suitable enclosure to fit then in with a cable clamp to stop your wires and new joint pulling apart. Something like these http://www.screwfix.com/p/greenbrook-connection-box-pack-of-10/48843 are a useful box, (although this is a pack of 10), if you go to your local B&Q the electrical dept should have something similar, as B&Q & Screwfix are both owned by the same parent company. Please also note EvansElectric comment to switch off before you actually start touching any live wires.

Does it matter if the junction box / wago is under loft insulation? It will not catch fire???

My sister is Divs!!

It is unlikely to cause any fire risk unless you have added an unusually high number of very high power lamps on to the circuit.

I have to ask: How did you accidently cut through the cable in the loft  ? What were you doing ?

If your sister is good looking female then Steps will come and fix it for free :slap
May I just apologies on behalf of the forum for the lewd comments from our regulars, The Sunday evening drink appears to be kicking in now.  Out of interest, did the fuse blow when you cut the cable and do you have a fuse box with switches rather than the old fashioned wire fuses?

Canoeboy, I was cutting through a floor board ready for loft insulation!

Many thanks for your help guys, I was going to call a electrician to come and do it for me.

I will let you know how I get on.

Hello Doc,

The breaker downstairs switched off and now all the lights upstairs do not work.
