can anyone recommend a good aerial signal tester? Something to test how active existing aerials are. I've seen some around just want to make sure I get a good'n

I am sorry mate I do not deal with any of this type of work, just wanted to bump the thread to get you the help you need, if anyone can.

You can pay a LOT of money for a proper aerial signal analyser, the best ones incorporating a spectrum analyser.

But is that really what you want? are you going to be doing a lot of aerial installs?

I just use a 7" completely portable (internal batteries) analogue / digital tv that I bought from ebay for

Just buy one of these

Satellite and TV Signal Meter Finder Fringe 2 in 1 NEW | eBay UK

Works a treat, the only thing as Pro Dave might point out it will not differentiate if a line or mast amp is in place, but for 9/10 installs it's perfect

For satellite alignment I use one of these 3.5" Color LCD Digital Satellite Finder Signal Meter | eBay UK

There are several sellers offering those on ebay, that is the first one I found today, not necessarily the cheapest one. Mine came from a seller in Hong Kong. There are also two other versions of that, clearly the same works but in a different package both worth considering as well.
There certainly a wide choice now, I think the first link Dave is a bit bulky for use up a ladder or on a roof, seems that more compact models around now, also the versions that can identify Astra 2 series over other Sats look favourite

I bought my 7" tv with a dual purpose of aligning tv aerials, AND using it as a portable tv in my caravan. So yes I probably bought a larger one than needed.

The satellite meter I bought is available also in a much smaller hand held format, or again if you want a larger screen for dual purpose use, there's a 7" version available.

What I like about my solution, over a signal meter, is you get to view an actual television channel, so there is no doubt at all you are aligned to the correct satellite.
