I think its the pre combustion chamber, not sure if going be scrap now.

Sorry could not get the pics to show the cracks .....but in my crap simple terms.... the crack are in side the round thing with the hole in it.

If it is what you/I have said, then they are interference fitted by heating the head and freezing the insert in liquid nitrogen, so it may not be possible to replace.

Well, the head line i worked on was this way anyway.

You may need a new head, but these are not necessarily a main dealer job these days, try your local independent engine rebuilder, your local independent motor factors, and your local Unipart, or similar.

I had a similar head for my Ford Ranger for less than a 1/4 of the price of the main dealer, and it was fine, new and from a reputable supplier.

Hi,

The bit with a crack is a "pre combustion chamber" insert. They often crack. I know that some makers allow a certain amount of cracking before they consider that there is a problem. In other words, they would just ignore the cracks if they were below a certain size...

The only way to know is to take the head along to a main dealer who will have all the makers info and show them and see what they say...

That crack is where the spark plug sits , I thought. Would only say to get it round to your local head skimming /repair/decoking man and see what he says .

What made you remove the head , Nasher , was it lack of compression in that cylinder ? Oh I see now, head gasket .

As a leading diesel engine expert I don't usually concern myself with common petrol engines :D Still expert opinion needed IMHO

 
I have rebuilt a few engines and am always amazed when they eventually start. FWIW if it were mine and I planned on keeping it for a good while then a recon head would be the way to go. If however, you are a bit like me and chop and change a bit then just get it checked, skimmed and bang it back on with a new headset.

so im not the only one who puts something back together, it works perfectly, even though there is a large pile of bits that should have been fitted somewhere?!

 
The last one I did was a Discovery 300TDi. went back together Ok with no 'spares' however the torque settings are not so straightforward. Rather than having 3 stages in NM or Lb/Ft you get a first stage of 30NM then 3 stages of 1/3 of a turn or something like that. I obviously got it wrong because after a 100 mile drive lots of smoke from under the bonnet as oil was all over the hot manifold. Bought a 2' bar and a socket and tightened all the head bolts up to my own setting of VT (very tight) and it was OK after that!
