I have always wondered what the truth is concerning "own brand" goods.

I noticed a comment recently that Kelloggs don't make corn flakes for anyone else.

Obviously the supermarkets buy in their own brand produce from major companies , then sell it cheaper. But are those beans, say, the same as Heinz or whoever.

Wondered if anyone had the inside knowledge.

We know, for instance, in our trade that Volex grid range is Crabtree , just the name is different.

Some years back we wired a new keg line at the Bass Charrington brewery in Brum. When up and running there were thousands of the 4 pint cans of Brew 11 trundling along, then they suddenly became "Sainsbury's Own Best Bitter, brewed in an old country brew house," for the afternooon.

Wickes electric showers are Triton.

Anyone have anymore. ??

When smiths used to make crisps they also did for tesco and m&s (if memory serves me right) qualtiy control was however a big difference. Every crisp went into the tesco bag, the worst were pulled out for smiths and only the best went inot the m&s bag.

Car batteries are another where one manufacturer makes several brands and again quality is different

Domestic appliances is another area where there are far more brands than manufacturers. Many production lines roll off the same machines and just have different badges\facias stuck on.

I've done some work at the Fyffes bananas depot in Basingstoke, in the warehouse are rows of packing benches & each bench is for a different consumer....so lane 1 is Sainsbury's.... 2 is Sainsbury's parrot brand....3 Tesco....4 Asda...5 Tesco.......6 Fyffes own brand........ you get the idea, but most of your bananas come from the same place.

Some usless info for you:

The bananas are picked green in country of origin, put on a ship to another port/country for a few days (this country is then classed as country of origin & price goes up), then to the uk for packaging, on the road to supermarket depots (in sainsbury's case it's a short trip across the road all of 400 yards for which the driver gets 1 run for the day)

Same thing happens with spuds & grain.....spuds grown here onto a ship across the seas into a port at Egypt for a few days, back to here on same ship (dont even get unloaded) & behold they are now more expensive Egyptian grown spuds.

As for the grain my brothers old job was to organise the shipment of UK grown grain onto ships across to another port for a week or so this then artificially forces up the price of grain due to shortage , so the loaded grain ship is then returned to UK & grain is sold at inflated prices.

What you forgot to add is that the ships are reefer boats which when the bananas temp is lowered go into a state of sleep then when they are taken out off refrigerated state start giving of a gas which cause them and any other fruit which they come in contact with to ripen;) ;)

I know that the Huge, well known brands of beans are fussy.

Their beans for THEIR product range had to be above a mimumum size. Anything smaller would get rejected for their own brand and will, instead, be used for 'other' brands that they had a contract to make.

Merloni make all the cheap crap for Hotpoint, Indesit etc... Absolute garbage the lot of it.
I certainly Agree to that, in the case of Washing Machines and Tumble Dryers.

The amount of trouble that Admin2 and I have had over the Years with them, is unbelievable. :_|

Its been nice knowing you septic. We will all come to your virual funeral :) .

The factory that I work in makes car air filter the only difference between brands is the box it is put in at the end of the line

I once visited a large Far East brand names factory in Korea, the warehouse was full of other brands that were rolling of the same production lines
