Hi and thanks in advance for any help. I have just got a shiny new laptop and there doent seem to be an audio out jack (green in colour) the red one doesnt sem to work, it is marked microphone after all! Nor does the black eaphones one! Do I need a usb convertor thing or surley not a new speaker set?

As Ian mentions try the headphone jack

Some obvious things to check ;)

Output volume to H/Phone is sufficient e.g. not at 0

The H/Phone output is not set to mute (right click on task bar speaker Icon to check)

Audio Device is installed (can you hear sound through built in speakers?)

Audio Device driver is present but corrupt (if so reinstall)

What are you plugging into the headphone socket (which is the audio out) and what OS, with which hardware?

On some stuff the headphone jack doesn;t do anything till you plug something in, and if you plug something in it doesn;t recognise it doesn;t activate it. Could be down to bad\corrupt\missing drivers, setting in the software\audio control panel or hardware issues.

It might even be as simple as having mute selected accidentally. Laptops often have a "Fn" key which when used in combination with the F1-F12 function keys performs hardware-specific functions, such as adjusting the screen brightness or volume.

All sorted now thanks for your suggestions, did all you said and it now works. Have to say I had already done all of that to no avail so may need new glass's!
