This is what happens when the insulation starts to break down on old rubber cables. The white bit in the middle is a buckle clip. The wall was very hot

When the clip was removed, all the insulation fell off

Sergio is resurrecting some old threads tonight.

Im not getting into trouble again, but yes this does highlight the perils of messing with old rubber cable!

A while back I pulled some VIR out of some conduit.

I saw the deeds so I could date it to 1946/7.

It was in that good a condition it was still serviceable.

Having said that, it had hardly done anything you could

call arduous service.

re-wired a house bomb damaged in WW II and subsequently wired in rubber cable in 1944, only bits that were knackered was where the cable had been flexed to enter the back of sockets, rest of it was still soft and pliable

few years ago done a job installing some new sockets, a certain un-named person (my dad...), removed some rubber cable from through the joists instead of drilling new holes. turned out to be the lighting circuit he chopped out....
