the BFI are to put the old public information films online, some of them were funny, some were scary and some downright weird! Remember the one with the green cross man? the kid crosses the road and as he gets to the pavement a large bloke appears from nowhere and tells him how good he was at crossing, can you imagine that as a kid of about seven, you'd lettuced yourself, probably run into the road to get away from him.some of them were quite memorable too,it will be intersting to see some of them again, there was one on a programme at the weekend, this guy with a large black and decker, the all metal one, anyway he pokes the wires into a socket with match sticks but the earth comes out hits the live and he gets electrocuted.then a voice says "always fit the correct plug".the funny thing is I'm sure all of us of a certain age have used another plug to jam a set of wires into a socket, havent we,oh and not forgetting using a piece of the foil out of a fag packet to replace a fuse in a plug,no way we'd do it now of course.

I heard this on local radio this morning , they played a few extracts .

What I always notice is that plummy upper clarse  accent used by the voice over presenter and that somewhat strange way of putting it over .

They should prove to be interesting , its like looking into , what is now another world .  Not to me I should add , as a good deal of my childhood  was radio only ,  no  television until we had our first B&W  , 1 channel only set .

if I remember correctly  a test card was transmitted all morning ( for installers to set up etc) until about 2.00pm , then programmes until about 10.30 pm when a religious person would appear to read "The Epilogue" .   Then the National Anthem , then a disembodied voice would tell us to switch off the set and to sleep well ...goodnight everyone , goodnight ...... then the picture suddenly imploded into a white spot ..................and THEN a loud annoying noise was transmitted to wake everyone up .

Children of my age would only watch Children's Hour  which I think was from , I think ,  3.45 pm with 15 mins for small children  then 4.00 till 5.00 with a Blue Peter type thing then  The Lone Ranger , Hopalong Cassidy , Lassie The Wonder Dog , or Fury the Wonder Horse.,  or Champion the Wonder Horse .   ( I  grew up thinking all horses were Wonder Horses and understood English)

I remember the "Pictures " on radio  being vivid  as we listened to  Journey into Space ,   Dick Barton Special Agent  or Paul Temple Investigates.

As teenagers at school the beginings of Rock n Roll was blowing our minds after a lifetime of " Bland nothingness music "  but you couldn't hear it anywhere , certainly not on BBC ( there were no other stations)   , kids couldn't afford to buy records so you had to go to a coffee bar and play the juke box .

The other way to hear  Elvis , Buddy Holly , Chuck Berry was to wait until darkness when Radio Luxembourg would come through loud and clear , complete with adverts but playing all the latest hits .

Another world , a gentler world , a more innocent world.........and now the saddness descends , recalling those I'll never see again and wish I could ................  ******  got something in my eye .

@Evans Electric funnily enough I can remember right back to when I was about 4 years old and sitting with my gran watching telly,it was black and white and as you say there wasn't much on,certainly not all day.after dinner there was Watch with mother, this was usually AndyPandy,orPogles Wood or something similar later on as I got a bit older there was Flash Gordon,Dick Barton and Just William.I spent a lot of time with my gran and vividly remember that she'd only put the telly on for certain things, not like today when people turn it on first thing in the morning and it stays on all day. There was Crown Court at 2.30 then at 5 there was Crossroads, and I can still remember the theme tunes to both of them,my uncle drove lorries and I remember him saying he'd seen Benny (Paul Henry) driving his Jag in Birmingham, and he was wearing his wooly hat.Come to think of it for years they were known as Benny hats, now they call them Beanies.Oh happy days, incidentally re the comment about Jimmy Saville and the Clunk Click adverts,he probably was a fan of seatbelts because it was easier to grope a girl when she had a seatbelt on.

Ah  yes  , you 'd see a lot of Benny  around ,  he had a bar in the city , I'm sure it was called Benny's  now I think of it .   And Noele of course , passing by in her Roller .

I was looking on youtube yesterday, there's some public information films on there, there's one by northwest electricity that was shown in schools in the 90's and it's really gory,I'd imagine a few kids were ill watching it.Interestingly enough there's one from the 60's called "Watch out for homosexuals". Can you imagine them putting one out like that today!

Well thanks for those Phil D  , that test card is more entertaining than some of today's programmes .

By the way can you help with this , I forgot to mention Roy Rogers , King of the Cowboys , who had BOTH a wonder horse and a wonder dog .
