Doing some Zs testing on a radial today. On a 2-gang, 1 side gave me a normal reading, but other side gave me an open circuit  .

Am I right to assume the actual SO is faulty? I did the test at the back of the SO also and reading was fine.

I'm asking 'cos it was brand new.

Cheers

faulty socket most likely. happens often on older, especially when large power appliance is always plugged in. but can still happen on new if there is a manufacturing fault

Yes new socket outlets can be faulty, I have found a few over the years.

If you have tested behind the socket outlet and found no problem then the only logically reason for any fault would be the outlet.

it could be dirty contacts.... try inserting the plug in and out a few times then try... otherwise get a new so....

i always do that on new accesories,,,,,,you dont know how long they have been on the shelf.

the same coes for mcb's,rcd's etc

Because of mass production not every item is checked and tested, they will pick one at random and test it, if that fails they will then check the whole batch made.

Not at all uncommon to have a knackerd switch only closing one pole of the socket outlet!

even on "NEW" accessories:(

more common with the cheaper 'Non-Brand' products. ;)

I had the same problem with a brand new MK socket, only one side working on twin socket.
