In comparison to other tablets these Playbooks seem to be availaible for silly money now like £80 for the 64GB 7" model! From the brief research I've done you can run some limited Android applications on them though only I think 2.3 stuff.

Thought what a wonderful, well made, cheap, base it would be for a LINUX (Ubuntu Touch?) tablet.

From what I've read, and tbh it's a lot beyond me, it has a "locked bootloader" that makes it difficult if not impossible? Also read that as the US military use them they won't unlock it?

 
AFAIK you can't replace the BB OS with Linux.

You should be able to run some Linux & Android stuff on it though.
