Just listening to R4 on the Brits not allowed to work at the Total Plant where Italian and Portugese are working. A phone call from someone who had been there said you would be welcome in Italy to holiday and spend your cash but don't think you will be welcome to work there because you wont.

Gov. says... Free movement of labour " My A**e".

What would you expect from a government who thinks that 50 years of unrestricted immigration into a tiny island country with a rapidly diminishing manufacturing base , is a good thing and still has the welcome mat out and the social services standing by to shell out our hard earned taxes. :_|

The government have said that they bring much needed skills , well thats a load of gonads, try driving round Birmingham during the day if you want to see how many are at work using those skills and not wandering up and the local High Streets doing begger all. :| :(

Fed up,

Brum

This may just fuel the fire a bit more, The Total plant (LOR) is near where I am currently working, There is a part to the story that is not fully being told. The Italian workers are actually living on boats, which has also hit the area's local trade very badly, this time of year there is normally 100's of contractors in the Lincolnshire area that are bringing in income for the local bed and breakfasts, restaurants, pubs etc as you can imagine the area is up in arms about what has happened. the ripples of this are very far spread and not doing the area any favours at all :(

What made me laugh was a comment that British workers had only just woken up to the threat of foreign labour - NO just needed a recession to bring things to the boil. I think we can expect a lot more trouble like this. And of course you can't help feeling back-stabbed when out sourcing to our 'special friends' in the USA.

..... British workers had only just woken up to the threat of foreign labour......
Further to this, British workers have been savvy to the problem for a long time...... it's our uninspiring "leaders" in Westminster that have been sleeping on the job for far too long and are unaware, or possibly choose to be unaware, of the problem.

Pyro.

The only saving grace might be the Euro!

They have had a massive pay cut recently and may find they earn more back home

:)

Never thought the Euro might actually help us

Where are all these workers out on wildcat strikes for the locals when us Brits descend on contracts like the LNG plant in Ireland; rigs and refineries in Baku, Sahklain Island and Nigeria or in the yards in Rotterdam and Norway.

Cant have it both ways which they all seem to do.

We also did a lot of all trades in construction in Germany in the 80's and 90's, sending a lot of the money back home to the families of that tradesman.

Same thing as this. The work was put out to tender and that company beat all the UK firms to it.

That's the way it works.

If we pulled out the EU, we could offer these jobs to our own people first.

It was on the news earlier that the strike has been called off, due to an agreeement being reached of 50 % of the jobs will go to UK Workers.

And for the benefit of Apache...

Things are never as one way as people think, but I still get annoyed when British management talk about a lack of skills in this country - could it be due to a lack of investment in training / apprenticeships???? or just bull!

The education system may have something to do with it as well.
