We bought a new laptop for our lad for his birthday last week

The tech guy at Comet said to us .....

put battery in

mains on

and back it up before doing anything...

would you believe it

it wouldnt back up

took it back got a replacement..

always back up a new pc or laptop when you get it out of the box

repairing pc's/laptops is where they make their money he said

The majority are like that Sept, they have been for several years. (at least mine have been - Acer and HP)

i just got the laptop no other discs

and it doesnt tell you to do an initial backup,,it was the tech guy who advised us

still people dont do it.....

I wait untill I have loaded all my programs before backing up, seems pointles not to as they would all need re-installing if a recovery is ever required.

This latest one took 3 discs.

I've done both partition and OEM disk based recoveries successfully, obviously losing all data and installed programs.

Not had much success using self made recovery disks, I prefer backing up to an external hard drive.

My solution is to use a second internal hard drive for my data, and then back up both hard drives to an external hard drive. Means I can change operating sytems or even complete systems and easilly transfer at least my important data. Have noticed some problems when changing from 32bit to 64bit proccessors and sometimes there are compatibillity problems when changing from XP to vista or 7.

With the internal hard drives there can be a problem if the data disk is IDE and the new computer only has SATA, although you can obtain adapters.
