Clamp Meter to measure voltage

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good cheap clamp meter to measure voltage. It needs to measure voltage from 0.01V to 24 V DC & if possible 0 - 400V AC.

Maybe its an american thing? Ive been watching youtube videos on how to test maf sensors, tps sensors etc on engines. My vans playing up and trying to get to the bottom of it. They had a meter with a mini clamp which measured the voltage outputs of the sensors. This was what i was looking for if anybody knew of them. Cheers

The reason why they make amp meters as clamp meters is due to the fact amps can only be measured in series and it is highly impractical to put your meter in circuit.

Voltage however is measured in series or parallel, therefore you can plonk your testers across any accessable terminals, not sure I've seen any voltage clamp meters.

Just use a good DMM and with accessories PC1 & PC2.

Thanks for the response guys. Yeah i meant MAF being Mass Air Flow sensor. Sits on air filter box on my van and uses a hot wire to measure air flow. Quite interesting how it all works actually. It feeds this info back to the ecu which then uses Throttle Position Sensor, MAP sensor & others to tell it how much fuel to add to the air.

Ill try find the link that showed the voltage clamp as i was quite amazed too... voltage clamp??

Not come across the acronym MAF before, always used to call them hot wire airflow sensors.

Yes they are quite clever, they are altitude compensating because of the variation in air density.

Though actually quite a basic principle of physics!

I actually hold C&G quals in automotive engine management type systems!!!

After searching through my youtube history for half hour i found what im talking about. Heres the vid

Ive bought a link and program for the laptop to enable the laptop to read the transits ecu to check trim levels etc, when it comes through i may need your help if you dont mind mate. I will be scanning the net trying to learn how to interpret the data it reads. Im well interested in this stuff as my dads a mechanic but since all the ecu's sensors came out etc hes not really interested (his dad was a wireman/electrician so he hates electrics and loves mechanics)

on the race bikes we usually junk the VAJs, (variable air jets) and set them up as fixed, allows more fine tuning of the mains for more ultimate grunt and those all too precious ponies at the very top, especially on the overrun,!

I suppose that was the main reasoning for ripping the injectors out of XR3i's as well and putting big webbers on 'em.!

IMHO carbs will almost always win over black boxes unless you have massive deep pockets.!

Im currently trying to build a race TZR 250 3MA, reverse cylinder,

but money not available just now,

previous few race bikes I have built have been NC35 's

I havent raced for quite a while now, was never any good anyway, but would love to give the Manx Grand Prix one last gasp, thats why the 3MA build TBH,.

That isn't a clamp, it's just a plunger action hooked test probe piercing the insulation.

Not cheap but goodFluke T5-1000 (doesnt clamp the volts but uses probes !)

Megger Mark List them so probably will do a deal

I have the t5 fluke find it very usefull good when you cannot get your normal clamp meter on the cables in a pannel

and with the prob holders built in so you dont need 3 hands to take readings
