Evening all,

In need of some advice please.

A few days ago I completed a CU change for a customer. All went well, no issues. Shortly after she rang to say the ignition button on the gas cooker was not working. I know it did work before as I saw it used. The thing is the cooker is on a 13a plug which was switched off and unplugged for the duration of the testing. I went out today to investigate, I think I have tracked down what could be the ignitor control unit but am stuck on how to confirm it's condition.

Two things,

a) It was working and isn't now. I don't believe it can be my fault but am obliged for customer satisfaction to attempt to resolve the issue.

B) Any one got any ideas on how to diagnose a cooker ignitor defect?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

make sure there is a 230v supply getting to the ignitor unit when you press button

if there is, then most likely faulty unit. if not, then wiring fault elsewhere, most likely switch

make sure she hasnt soaked it with water when cleaning the top

had that a few times

Cheers,

the thing is the item I'm assuming to be the ignitor control unit is located low down at the back, no indication of water around it either. Are these things reliable, I'm not a big believer in coincidents, but to have this go at the same time as I'm working there is unfortunate.

Forgot to mention, the customer is saying she can no longer light the oven!

Don't want to insult your intelligence but I take it You have checked obvius?

Supply ok at socket?

Fuse ok in Plug top?

If so then open up cooker and check supply up to ignitor, if all ok then as has been said new Part requierd

Right pain, get it all the time, TOB, "twas ok before" syndrome, just part of the job.

You say " I'm not a believer in coincidence" ,well time to do so Oh Ancient Mariner . I've had all sorts , the TV doesn't work since you came , lamp blows when you switch the power back on " OOOhh what have you done !!!!!" Throw the main switch after a rewire , nothing , customer is always standing there, turns out there was a power cut at the same time as you switched on !!!!

And one that constantly occurs on industrial jobs, After installing new supply to whatever, you grasp the handle of the 200A switchfuse , lever it into the on position at the same time as the fork truck driver drops a pallett of something behind you with a mighty BANG !!!!

Could you have meggered the ignitor, perhaps beggered it up.

Many thanks to all for the replys, I've just been back over there, hence the lateness of my reply.

It's a very old looking cooker came with the house when bought 5 months ago.

Mr Evans, I am beginning to come around to the conincidence bit.

Sparkytim, I'm not insulted, timer still works, clock is on. I've checked for power but to be honest it looks a bit like a snakes wedding behind those panels and the supply from the plug cable goes up to the clock. As I was exposing the clock I became aware thet I was getting deeper and deeper in it! Decided to refit it all and start over.

The problem since I looked at it this morning is, gas available to the hob and grill but not the main oven and top oven when used as an oven. It's a combi grill/small oven in the top. When the knob is turned for the grill gas comes on but turn it the other way for the small oven and nothing. Ignitor is trying to fire but lacks the oomph! I'm buggered. I've left messages with a local gas appliance repair man so hopefully we'll have it sorted.

Lesson learnt though, when the customer say's it was working before and I have unplugged it before even opeing my megger box I'll fight my corner. I was so keen to keep the customer happy now it will probably cost me a little.

It doesn't matter mate, all the good earners pay for times like these.

I had one last week with a better outcome, full re-wire I has finnished a couple of days before. Rang me at 9pm with no power (well half, dual split etc). I thought it was my fault, they thought it was my fault, I rushed round and turned out to be the freezer had gone faulty. They happily paid the call out and offloaded me with most of their frozen goods.

Cheers,

funny thing is this was a relatively good earner, might still make a small profit. I've got a local gas appliance repair man having a look at it tomorrow for me. I look forward to putting this one to bed.
