Hello everyone.

I am English, but lived in Denmark the past 13 years and have recently qualified as an electrician. I am planning to move back to the UK next year, and am interested as to which type of jobs would be available to me or where to start searching (career companies etc). Problem with being away so long is that i dont know where to start.

The Danish electrician education is four years long, 1.5 years schooling and 2.5 years work experience, and includes:

1 fased AC

3 fased AC

Housing

Industry/Commercial Electrics

Ihc/Smart House/IBI

Pc Schematics

PLC (programmable logical controller)

WINDLR (ladder programming)

dimensioning all types of installations

Motors both 240/400V

PC programming

HVAC (all installations)

Quality Control

Anyone with any good ideas would be much appreciated.

Ian

Hello Ian and welcome to the forum.

The first thing you would have to do is to see how your qualifications are accepted here in the UK. You would have to do at least the 17th edition wiring regulations, which should not be a problem for you.

Times are hard for all employers at the moment and there have been large redundancies in the electrical trade, so now it is not a good prospect to find good jobs.

However not impossible, good luck with your search.

I have only met one person in the UK that had Danish qualifications.

He was working as a Mate, about 2 years ago.

I assume that his qualifications were not then accepted by the JIB as sufficient for him to get an electricians grade.

I seem to remember that he had no idea of how to install metal conduit. Said it was not used in Denmark?

If a "metal conduit" translates properly as "metal kanal" then it would mean a place where cables are run. However very diificult to get the direct translation. If it is a place where you run cables then i cant see why he has never tried it.....but please explain what it is so i make sure that i know what i am talking about. Any other terms are much appreciated, as i need to do alot of translating.

I think Metal Kanal is what we call Trunking. Square with a lid that runs the the whole length.

Conduit is round tube/pipe, and the cable/wires have to be pushed in from one end. I believe you have plastic conduit that is Orange in colour.

Metal conduit comes in threaded lengths. If the length is too long, it is cut and a new thread is made on the end. These lengths are screwed together using couplers or Beza boxes.

Hello Ian,

I am actually in the same position as you are, Danish qualified and looking to return to the UK next year. The 17th edition is pretty much the same as SB6 though with a few minor difference. www.Ciriusonline.dk is the danish organisation responsible for evaluating foreign certificates to danish standards, however they have no counterparts that they know in the UK, the best that I have been able to find is www.naric.org.uk however, I have not as yet made contact with them. Let me know what you think?

The JIB is probably the only organisation that will consider foreign Certification in the UK.

If you wish to work on the majority of building sites in the UK, you will need to pass an ECS health and safety test and then apply for a JIB card.

The JIB will then issue a card which will state what they consider your skill level to be. Based upon what qualifications you produce in support of you application.

Labourer, Apprentice, Adult Trainee, Installation Electrician, Approved Electrician etc.
