I need to install a mirror demsiter pad to a mirror which has a metallic frame.

These pads are class 2

According to the installation instructions:

"All metal parts surrounding the mirror, e.g. the frame, must be earthed to comply with the IEE Wiring regulations – Seventeenth edition (BS7671:2008) or equivalent national wiring regulations."

To complicate matters, the mirror has a seperate removeable magnetic magnifying mirror which also appears to have a metallic frame.

Now I know we have to follow manufacturers instructions, but to me this is the manufacturer saying this needs to be done to comply with regs and as such their interpretation of the regs may be incorrect.

As far as the frame is concerned I really dont see how I can physically make a reliable connection.

As for the detachable piece I'm hoping this doesnt need any connection as it is on the front face of the mirror and the pad is on the back.

I can't see any of this to be really necessary and have visions of the detachbale piece on a  green/ellow flying lead! Like a bonded window frame!

Thoughts please?

I would un-read that bit of the instructions and throw them away.

the pad will be behind a bit of glass, which last time I tried was a very good insulator, but it's a class 2 device anyway.

Earth would only be needed if it was an exposed conductive part, which it isnt if the demister is class II

My thoughts exactly gents - thanks for the confirmation though!

any of the demister I have fitted always ask for a plain mirror with no frame, acts like a heatsink IME and ends up with a demister that doesnt work too good,

anyhow, I would worry about earthing it, if it was a wooden frame would you need to earth the nails?  :C
