I've a lamp that has a standard plug and plugs into the mains. I wanted to put a dimmer on the light so I split the live and using a one way dimmer switch (remote control type) I connected it up but the dimmer switch now will only turn the light on and no other function. ie it won't DIM or knock the light off. I had thought it would merely work like a norm switch by joining up a broken circuit. Is this not the case??

Have you used the correct terminals?

Some dimmer switches have 3 terminals, and if you choose the wrong pair, they become switches instead of dimmers.

Has the light fitting got a dimable lamp?

If yes... is it within the wattage range for the dimmer?

Many dimmers have a Min & Max wattage...

Too low or Too high it woe work proper!

;)
