hi all,

I've purchased a new dimmer switch but the terminals are labelled with L, V, and S can anybody please help with how I connect the switch, the existing is wired as a two way switch with 3 core and earth and the terminals are labelled L1, L2 and common (~). The feed is at the other switch and it is wired black to common, brown with the live from the feed in L1 and grey with the switch live in L2

thanks for your help

What make is your new switch? and did it come with any instructions?

Sorry, but I've never come across a switch with those markings so the above info would help

Do you have access to test equipment to test the resistance between each pair of connections and the effect that adjusting the dimmer has on these readings?

Here you go

http://www.danlers.co.uk/soft-start-dimmers-leading-edge/81-products/dimmers/leading-edge-dimmers/soft-start-dimmers/189-dss1d-400w-soft-start-dimmer

You may have to click to enlarge the "wiring diagrams" section of that page.

L is live in

V is variable (dimmed) output

S is slave connection.

Reading the more detailed instructions here http://www.danlers.co.uk/images/downloads/installation-guide/soft-start-dimmers/INS921-DSSxD.pdf

I would say it CANNOT be used with a normal 2 way switch at the other end, ONLY with a master dimmer one end and a slave dimmer the other end.

If you want to replace a conventional dimmer in a 2 way switching circuit, where you have one dimmer and one switch, then this one will NOT do what you want. Take it back and exchange it for a normal dimmer.
