Hi everyone,

I’m trying to change the cover of my double dimmer switch. It is in the living room. One dimmer controls the ceiling light and the other two wall lights in the alcoves. I opened the switch and looked at the wires this is what I saw. (First pic). Two brown wires go into C, one brown in L1 and a blue in opposite L2 and the earth wires.

The replacement, which is a Screwfix standard does not have a C, but rather an L1, a strange symbol and L2 on one end and exactly the same on the other end?

I know next to nothing about electrics, however after being quoted £300 to Change 4 socket covers and one dimmer cover (without parts or vat) I have no choice but to try and do it myself!

Thanks in advance

Emma

The wavy line / arrow (tilde symbol) is the common connection but I'd recommend getting an electrician for your own safety (ring around to compare quotes). The blue cable may be neutral or an unmarked switched live connection.

A quote for £300 tells me the installer has quoted high so he doesn’t get it or if he does he’s quids in.

maybe ask neighbours and friends for local recommendations ?
