Gentlemen
May I have a little guidance on ev charging please.

both of my plug in hybrid cars have charge leads with a 13 amp plug on end and a 7pin car plug the other and they are interchangeable.

1 what form is the electricity that is presented to the car?
2 what does the box in the cable do?
3 what are the small pins in the plug for
4 does the 7kw slow charger just have a bigger version of what's in the box, in the wall mounted enclosure.
5 does anyone make a heavy duty WiFi switched socket, in anticipation of moving to an EV tariff, I need to be able to schedule my charging.

Cheers
Paul

1: leccy straight from the mains
2: tells the car what the max supply is
3: as above, and to tell the charger to switch on
4: pretty much
5: probably

When I first got my EV I designed, built and programmed my own wallbox.

Theres on really one control line involved that uses various aspect of a 1kHz pilot signal. I have attached a PDF presentation from the OPEN EVSE group if you want to read further. Many people refer to the wall boxes as chargers, they're not, the charger is built in to the car.
