Extractor Hob - Motor Issue

Hi all,

thank you in advance for your help.

My very budget extractor hob (Cooke and Lewis CLCGS60) decided to stop working yesterday. The light is still working, only the motor/fan is not starting on any speed.

Is only 1y old and taking back to warranty is not an option as this has been made to measure, don't have the original packaging and wasn't installed by a certified electrician. 

I already removed the covers and I've done a visual check for all the wiring/connections (with my not the best skills in the world), everything looks ok.

Seen many people on the internet saying the grease is the main issue, mine doesn't have much grease on it, nearly nothing, as I said is only 1y old and we are only a couple using it, not excessive cooking.

I'm planning in buying tomorrow a multimeter to check what/where is the fault, the motor or the capacitor.

Please excuse my English and I'm happy to explain, if you have any queries or if is anything unclear.

What do you think the issue could be?

Any advice where I can buy spare parts?

In my experience its nearly always a faulty switch .

Only 1 of your pictures works.

Can you hear the motor hum?  Will it start if you give it a push?

I had one similar and against all odds I split the motor open and found a failure where the flex cables soldered to a motor winding.

TIP best degreaser I found for working inside cooker hoods was white spirit.

Hi,

ProDave:  The motor is not making any noises, nothing at all. Tried to start it with a piece of string, to give it a push as that was my first plan to test the capacitor, but again didn't work.

Not sure what to degrease inside the motor because is clean inside, nearly spotless.

Evans Electric:  The issue is that I don't know how to identify any faulty switches, unfortunately  .

But, that motor doesn't look compatible with mine and they want to sell the whole thing not only the motor itself. My motor has 6 wires coming out, 2 going to the capacitor and the other 4.

I will try to contact an electrician and hopefully, he will be able to tell me what is the issue or otherwise I will buy a new one as the last option.

If it comes to replacing major parts, i.e. the switch block or motor, plus handling/postage, etc  you will probably find you are paying most of the price of a new unit.

A new one  would have the advantage of a guarantee whilst eliminating the risk of an expensive incorrect diagnosis.

Geoff1946: I know...now I'm looking for a new one to order.

Does anybody know if no hardworking is required, do I still need an electrician to install it in order to benefit from the warranty in case of any faults?

Found a couple from Hotpoint, Hoover, Candy, what I hope they are better budget brands.

Also, the chimney is not intended to be cut to size but I will have to adjust mine in order to fit in my kitchen. Will this invalidate the warranty?

I've not personally  seen a warranty on an appliance which is conditional on who installed it, only on it being installed IAW their instructions.

If you modify it you may have a problem, but you would have a reasonable case if it's only the chimney bit you altered; it's just a bit of sheet metal quite separate to the hood itself, and I would imagine is often shortened to fit low ceilings.

yeah right, they will honour  the warranty 

their  warranties are referred to as an Orange Door warranty...as soon as you have gone through the orange door the warranty evaporates.  Or so I have been told, but what would I know
