Can anyone inform me as to what a G59 protection relay is used for and does anyone have an indication of the cost. Many thanks in advance

It is a loss of mains protection relay.

Cost?  Shade less than a wedge.

(£1000).

It is necesary when the source of

energy produces a supply that is

in parallel (synched on) to the grid.

It is not necessary in domestic solar

because this is single phase.

Many thanks Tech. For clarification they are only required on three phase systems? What if the PV system is single phase, however forms part of a three phase supply ie the main incomer is three phase??

As I see it, it would be unwise to connect a single phase

PV array to a three phase system. There would be several

issues, not the least of these would be balancing.

Someone might have other ideas but any source of energy

producing a three phase energy source needs one of these

as protection should mains power be lost for whatever

reason.

The name of the device is from a guidance note on the

connection of energy sources to the grid of less than

50 kW or aggregate of 50kW.

You can get smallish 3 phase inverters starting at 5kW. if you have 3 phase supply you can install 12kW without talking to DNO, though if you ask nicely they may let you have a bigger system assuming you have the roof space. Some popel also fit 3 small inverters, 1 per phase, but I'm not convinced that they would balance properly.
