Hi All

I have been asked to quote for a job installing a new consumer unit and a meter.

The customer owns a large property in the sticks. He has a four car garage with a twelve way consumer unit in it driven from the main consumer unit in the house. It is connected via a 10mm SWA cable from the house, Earthing is TT. The consumer unit is split with a 30ma and a 100 ma RCD.

He has just converted a storage area and a room above the garage into a self contained granny flat. Eight of the ways in the existing consumer will be used to serve circuits in the granny flat.

The garage part of the building that he does not want metered has two lighting circuits and one ring main.

He now wants to rent out the granny flat and he would like a separate consumer unit and meter for the granny flat. He has been in touch with a local electrical supplier and has bought a reconditioned electric meter (I think that they were once power company meters).

The job is to fit a new consumer unit to serve the garage circuits, transfer the relevant garage circuits to the new consumer unit and connect up the meter so that it measures all of the power consumed going through the original consumer unit for circuits feeding the granny flat.

My plan is to keep the existing garage consumer unit to serve the granny flat. connect in the meter and to install an new four way consumer unit with 30ma RCD to serve the garage part of the building and to hive off the three garage circuits on to the four way consumer unit.

However I need a magic box to terminate the armoured coming from the house and to connect the four way consumer unit and the meter for the twelve way consumer unit

I was wondering if a switch fuse is the way forward. These do seem to be mega expensive. Or if there is a better and less expensive solution?
