I have had good info from you last year, Thanks!,

....I now know that I need at least 25mm armoured three core for my new workshop, but, I now might want to increase the length from 40 to 50 meter, what will I lose in voltage drop? If it is to much I will fix to  tempory unit then permenant when worshop is finished. I need to keep supply as I use it everyday and wife has a freezer running off of it. My old workshop is an old double garage with a fuse wire unit in it, everything is run off a 40 meter long 6mm twin and earth and apart from welders and chop saws I dont have many problems, even the welder can run in low amp setting but is just to low for a lot of jobs I need to do. I trip the house unit regularly when using the big stuff, If I put an extra ten meters of cable on I can run to the new part of my worshop and wire into a new unit with a temp supply to old workshop untill it is pulled down this summer, I think I have enough of a load so I havent wired up my new workshop yet to the old supply, the conection will be made into the 10mm supply in my house by a qualified chap I know.

The other thing is the cost of extra 10 meter of cable making it 50 mtr, whare would your chaps buy top quality cable from, and is there brands of cable to avoid? or that you can recomend.

.......once again thanks from Dave.

you dont always need 3 core, if you TT it you only need 2 core, and even if your exporting the earth, in many cases, the armour is adequate to be used as the earth without an additional core used

To Andy,

My new workshop is steel framed with 16 steel floor bolts 500mm long into the ground through concrete, so I was thinking, if I can use 2core like you said then earth the steel armour to the frame, would that be safe and meet regs, and save me some money as I aint' well off. any advice is welcome,

How much do you think I'd be looking at to hire a chap to do the job for me?

..............with thanks, Dave.

Cheers andy tm,

sorry, daft question to ask, will prob end up doing most of it myself anyways. might save myself up to £100,000 lol.

Andy Zeespark, I ment Mansfield Notts.

Hi steptoe,   I need to run my oil cooled Welders up to 140 amp, (one at a time) they can run up to 180amp, also, my workshop might be pulling up to 8kw, at peak times, the cable run is 40-50mtr overhead. I have had conflicting info on cable size, my home is small but my wife has a hot tub, the house supply comes in on two 10mm tails. single phase is all I require. the workshop will need to make me a living soon so I dont want to make any costly mistakes.

Any advice from you would be bril.,

         thanks Dave.

without doing the calcs, I'll do them for you when I get home,

you might struggle a bit for volt drop and Zs, with an 8kW load over 50m

what protective device will you use at source?  a C40 60898 only allows 0.46 :eek:hms     whats your Ze at present?

hi steptoe, from cu a C32A with a 63amp main rcd, 40mtr 6mm twin & earth to wire fued cu.

I am planning to connect to main tails but havent worked out what protective device to use yet.

Hi Andy™,

I dont know much about fuse types or witch one to fit, great site this. Think I will join.

Im lost a bit with that,

really, we would need to know your Ze to be truthful,

even a C32 60898 only permits 0.58 :eek:hms

a Ze of (say) 0.30 :eek:hms   isnt going to give you much to work with on a 50+mtr run
